Instagram is a simple way to capture, customize, and share photos and short videos using your smartphone or another mobile device.

You can upload photos and videos to your Instagram profile to share with other Instagram users, or connect your Instagram profile to other social networks, such as Facebook, to share with friends and followers across multiple social platforms.

Instagram Integration

You can integrate Instagram with your site in several ways:

Instagram Embeds

You can embed an image or video from Instagram on your blog easily.

Watch the video below for a quick overview of how it works, and read below for more examples and settings.

First, copy the image’s URL from your web browser’s address bar while viewing the image:

Paste it on a line by itself in the editor and it will automatically embed the post inside an Instagram block.

That’s it! By default, the URL embeds the largest size of the image available, which is 612px wide. Video embeds look very similar but will show the triangle “play” symbol:

You can also wrap an Instagram URL in shortcode, replacing LINK with the URL:

[instagram url=LINK]

This shortcode achieves the same result as simply posting the URL, but does not require the URL to be on its own line.

The shortcode can also be used to modify the size of the embed.  By default, it will take up the full width of the content area, but by adding a width specifier to the shortcode, you can make it as small as 320 pixels (the minimum for the embed to work).

For example:

[instagram url=LINK width=320]

Instagram Widget

The Instagram Widget allows you to display your latest Instagram photos in your site’s sidebar.

Watch the video below for a quick overview of how it works, and read below for more examples and settings.

Here’s an example of what it looks like when using the Twenty Twelve theme:

The number of images and the number of columns are configurable. These configuration options are explained in more detail, below.

Authorizing Instagram Account Access

First, add the Instagram Widget to your site without authorizing it. You can do so by navigating to My Sites Design Customize, and selecting the Widgets option. Click Add a Widget, and select the Instagram Widget from the list.

Next, click Publish at the top of your Customizer.

Next, you can grant access to the Instagram account that you wish to display images from. You can only display images from an Instagram account that you own or otherwise have access to.

Make sure to select Publish before selecting Authorize Instagram Access

To do so, first log into your Instagram account in another tab in your browser. After logging into, return to the Instagram widget in your Customizer and click Authorize Instagram Access. This step grants access to your Instagram account, so we can retrieve your latest images.

Your Customizer will then reload, and you can return to the Instagram widget to configure its settings.

  • Authorized Account: This is the Instagram account that the widget is currently connected to. Click the “remove” link to remove the link and connect the widget to a different Instagram account.
  • Widget Title: The title to be displayed above your images. You can leave this blank if you want.
  • Images: This controls the number of images that will be displayed at once in your sidebar. It will showcase the most recently published images on your Instagram account.
  • Layout: The number of columns to display your images. The higher the number of columns, the smaller the images will be displayed.

When you’re finished, click Save & Publish and then visit your website to see your shiny, new Instagram widget!
