Manage Your Ads.txt File

When placing ads on your website, you may wish to customize your site’s ads.txt file. This guide will show you how to create and edit ads.txt on your site.

This feature is available on sites with the WordPress.com Creator and Entrepreneur plans, and the legacy Pro plan. For sites on the free, Starter, and Explorer plans, upgrade your plan to access this feature.

Introduction To Ads.txt

Ads.txt is a file that allows a site owner to manage which ad sellers are authorized to provide digital advertising on their website. The file provides more control over who is allowed to sell ads on a site and helps prevent certain types of ad fraud.

You can find ads.txt on a site by adding the ads.txt file name to the end of the site URL, for example wordpress.com/ads.txt.

You can customize the ads.txt file on a plugin-enabled site. Sites that do not have a plan that supports plugins will not need to customize ads.txt, as ads.txt is handled automatically by WordAds.

WordAds Sites

If your site earns revenue from ads directly through WordPress.com, we will automatically generate a custom ads.txt file for your site.

You can add additional entries to this ads.txt file from other advertising services with the following steps:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Tools → Monetize (or Hosting → Monetize if using WP-Admin).
  3. Click the “View ad dashboard” button.
  4. Select the Settings tab.
  5. Scroll to the Ads.txt section and toggle the “Customize your ads.txt file” option to the on position.
  6. Add additional entries for other networks with one entry per line. Click Save to save your changes.

Non-WordAds Sites

If your site does not use the advertising network provided by WordPress.com and uses a third-party advertising platform such as Google AdSense, there are two options for editing your ads.txt file.

You can use a plugin to generate ads.txt files, similar to the way Jetpack does for WordAds sites:

  1. Install and activate the free Ads.txt Manager plugin.
  2. In the dark bar on the left-hand side of your dashboard, click SettingsAds.txt.
  3. From here, add your custom ads.txt file entries and click Save.

Use SFTP

You can upload your own ads.txt file directly to your site using SFTP. Upload your custom ads.txt file to the root directory of your site.
