When you purchase a new annual plan for your WordPress.com site, your subscription includes a free domain for one year. The credit doesn’t expire, so you can use it immediately or save it until you’ve found exactly the right name for your site!
In this guide
Purchase any annual WordPress.com plan to receive a free domain credit, which you can use for one of the following options:
- Register a new domain for free for the first year. After the first year, the domain renews at the standard price.
- Transfer an existing domain from another provider, which will add one additional year to the domain’s registration period.
This credit is only available to new plans on an annual payment schedule. Monthly plans do not come with a free domain credit.
To use your domain credit, take the following steps:
- Visit your site’s dashboard.
- Navigate to Upgrades → Domains (or Hosting → Domains if using WP-Admin).
- Claim your free domain in one of two ways:
- Click the “Search for a domain” button to register a brand-new domain.
- Click the “I have a domain” button to transfer a domain you own to WordPress.com.

No, the free domain credit cannot be used to renew a domain that is already registered on WordPress.com. You can register a new domain or transfer an existing domain from another provider.
If you cancel the plan that included a free domain, you have the option to cancel your domain or keep it for the remainder of its registration period.
- If you request a refund within the 96-hour domain refund period and choose to cancel the domain, you will receive a refund for the full amount of your plan purchase.
- If you choose to keep the domain, or if you request a refund after the 96-hour domain refund period but within the 14-day refund window for annual, two-year, or three-year plans, your refund will have the cost of the domain registration automatically deducted from the total refund amount.
