WordPress Block Editor

  • Wordpress is still saying that all users on WordPress.com will be moved to the Block Editor on June 1 2020. It is now June 2 2020 in the UK and even in California. However, moving to the Block Editor is still an option. So does anyone know if we are all going to be moved to the Block Editor and if so, when?

  • The editor was made the default, but if you really want to use the classic editor, it is still available: https://wordpress.com/support/editors/#classic-editor

We also have tips for transitioning from the classic editor to blocks https://wordpress.com/support/switching-from-the-classic-to-the-block-editor/ and FAQs: https://wordpress.com/support/replacing-the-older-wordpress-com-editor-with-the-wordpress-block-editor/#frequently-asked-questions

We do recommend the new editor though, and we have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

If you have feedback that could help make the new block editor a better experience for you, please let us know here: https://wordpress.com/forums/topic/feedback-thread-for-the-block-editor/

  • Thank you for your reply. However, the block editor is still offered as an option when I go to make a post. I have just gone to my WordPress.com website and tried creating a post and I get a popup inviting me to move to the block editor, but I can still decline it.

So, when are you going to make the editor the default? That is, when I create a new post I will find myself using the block editor and I would then have to make some effort to try to return to the older editor.

I have no problem with using the block editor, just that if you are saying you are going to make it the default it would be good if you did.

To explain, I look after a private WordPress.com website with 100+ users. They have minimal computing skills and little interest in acquiring more. So we have simple guides to help them create posts and add photos etc. I have re-written these guides for the block editor, but if each individual user can decide when or if they are going to switch to the block editor it is going to be a hard job to convince them to switch. So a forced move to your block editor, as your earlier posts suggested would be wonderful news.

So when are you really going to make the switch?

  • @joyford,

Our team encountered some problems when it came to actually making the switch, but the My Sites editor is still going to be removed, hopefully still within the next week or two.

I understand how this could be disrupting for you, but this change affects millions of users, so we want to make sure we only do it once and do it right, rather than having to roll back changes due to problems we didn’t foresee and didn’t prepare for :)

  • Hello Kokkieh, thank you for your reply and for explaining what is happening. I can now plan a strategy for my modest 100 or so members and I will keep an eye open for when the change finally takes place.
Now that I am getting used to the block editor I am seeing its benefits. I can see that the concepts behind it create cleaner HTML and far less chance of us users ending up with unexpected results. So congratulations to the good folk at WordPress!
    Thank you again, Chris

  • Happy to help, Chris :)
