Make Your Site Faster With Our Global Edge Cache
A new feature that automagically makes your site load a bit faster for visitors.
No matter your website’s goals, speed and efficiency are key. The bottom line is that you want your website to be fast and accessible for visitors, no matter where they are in the world.
WordPress.com’s Global Edge Cache (pronounced like “cash”) makes your site load faster for visitors around the world by taking advantage of our global network of data centers. This feature is always enabled on Free, Personal, and Premium sites. For our Business and Commerce sites, you can now manage the Global Edge Cache settings from the “Hosting Configuration” page.
What is global edge caching?
Say your website is hosted at one of our data centers in Amsterdam and a visitor from Cape Town wants to access it. The request from the visitor has to travel halfway around the world and back again to be fulfilled—that is, load the site on their device.
Through some backend technical wizardry, our Global Edge Cache means that the request only needs to travel to Johannesburg and back, saving your visitor tens or even hundreds of milliseconds. It may not seem like much, but when you’re online, every millisecond counts.
In short, enabling this caching feature brings your content closer to your visitors, wherever they might be. This means faster load times, less waiting, and a better overall experience. And as we all know, a happy visitor is more likely to become a loyal customer or follower.
Speed up your site with three simple steps
The WordPress.com Global Edge Cache is always enabled for sites on Free, Personal, and Premium plans. On a Business or Commerce site, you can enable Global Edge Cache from the Hosting Configuration page.
Here’s how to do it:
- From your dashboard, go to Settings → Hosting Configuration.
- Scroll down to the “Cache” module.
- Click the toggle for “Enable global edge caching for faster content delivery.”
Once you click that toggle, you’re all set!
Build your future on WordPress.com
Many hosts charge extra for this kind of edge caching, or require integration with a third-party provider. On WordPress.com, global edge caching is included on every plan, without any bandwidth restrictions.
This is just one more reason why WordPress.com stands out as the premier managed WordPress host. Be it staging sites, SSH and WP-CLI access, or unified site management, we’re always working on new tools to make WordPress.com an essential component of your development workflow.
What other features would you like to see? How can we make WordPress.com an even more powerful place to build a website? Feel free to leave a comment or contact our friendly support team. And be sure to follow our develop blog to stay up-to-date with everything we’re doing to make your behind-the-scenes experience even better.

“This feature is always enabled on Free, Personal, and Premium sites”
So there was no need for me to read this email. I wish WordPress would target its emails better and only send things like this to the people who actually need to read them – in this case “Business and Commerce sites”

Hi there, you are receiving this as an email because you are subscribed to our blog, where we make general announcements that apply to most WordPress.com site owners. Sites on on the Business and Commerce plans already enjoy excellent caching via our managed hosting: https://wordpress.com/hosting/
If you would rather not get these blog announcements (which are not targeted) you can follow the steps here to unsubscribe. Thanks!

My site total counts of view max is 60 persons, and no heavy video or millions of pictures, most of them are texts. How come it can load this abnormally slow ? I don’t get it.

Hello,
one question: in terms of performance improvement, is this feature something like Cloudflare APO or is it a completely different thing?
Thanks
LikeLiked by 6 people
Hi! It’s similar to Cloudflare’s APO as both are edge caching technologies. The only difference is that our Global Edge Cache is highly optimized for WordPress and our infrastructure.

Hi, thanks for your answer! In order to test it, I guess I have to deactivate the Cloudflare plugin, but do I also have to move my DNS back to WordPress or can I stay with Cloudflare?

Update: I’ve deactivated APO and activated Global Edge Cache. The cache hit ratio went from about 97% to 20-25%. Am I missing something here?

Hmmm… can you contact us here so we can take a closer look? It’s difficult to investigate this here within the blog comments section. Thanks!

May I know how does this affect plugins and WP theme which already has caching features on?

Global Edge Cache will work with caching plugins. There are some cases though where it may cache too much. If this happens, you can manually clear the cache in Hosting Configuration. Also, make sure you’re not using a caching plugin that’s incompatible with WordPress.com. You can the list of incompatible plugins here: https://wordpress.com/support/plugins/incompatible-plugins/#caching-plugins

When I enter Hosting Configuration, I only see an option to upgrade my plan to business. I currently have a free one. The article says this is for all plans, yet…
Same with backing up my blog.

Hello there! This particular feature is always active on Free, Personal, and Premium sites. However, for Business and Commerce sites, it is not enabled by default, which is why the Hosting Configuration is needed.
As for backups, if your website is hosted on WordPress.com, we take care of all the necessary backups. Even in the unlikely event of a catastrophic incident where all our servers were obliterated by a massive meteor, rest assured that your data would remain secure. We would strive to have your site up and running again within three days (once the meteor situation has settled, of course).
If you prefer to manually back up your site content, you can utilize the Export option located under Tools -> Export.
I hope this provides a clearer understanding!

I would love to see integration with Mastodon/Fediverse for all accounts, not just the business tier. So frustrating to know that Automattic purchased a plugin to add this functionality, but it’s only available to the tiers that can install plugins to begin with. The Mediverse is really starting to gain traction, I’d love to see us all be able to be a part of it.

I have some exciting news for you! 😄
The Jetpack team has recently introduced support for Mastodon and Instagram Business accounts. This means that even though we didn’t have the integration ready when we deprecated Twitter support, you can now enjoy posting automatically to Mastodon and Instagram on all WordPress.com plan levels!
You can find more information and instructions on how to set it up here: https://wordpress.com/support/post-automatically-to-social-media/#mastodon
I hope this update brings you joy and helps you with your social media needs! If you have any further questions or need assistance, feel free to ask. 😊

Oh my gosh, Carolyn, you are my hero. I had no idea this had been extended to Premium members, the last announcement I saw about this indicated that it required the ability to install plugins. Yes, this has definitely brought me much joy and for that, I thank you. 🙂

Hi
I no longer want to receive emails from you at WordPress but I want to keep my WordPress blog alive. How can I do this? I was afraid to press the Unsubscribe button in case it deleted my blog. Please advise.

Hello! If you would like to stop receiving emails from us, you can simply use the Unsubscribe button found in those emails. When you click on that button, it will remove you from our mailing list, but don’t worry, it won’t have any impact on your website. Your site will remain completely unaffected.
I hope this information addresses your concerns and provides you with the reassurance you were looking for! If you have any more questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask.
