You may wish to own a domain in your WordPress.com account but not have it associated with a particular website. This is often referred to across the web as “parking” a domain. This guide will walk you through how to detach a domain from your website so that a ‘parking page’ appears instead.
To detach a domain from your WordPress.com website:
- Visit your site’s dashboard.
- On the side, navigate to Upgrades → Domains (or Hosting → Domains if using WP-Admin).
- Click on the domain you want to detach from your website.
- At the bottom of the right sidebar, click the button labeled “Detach“.
- On the confirmation box, click on the button labeled “Detach“.
- A banner will appear, confirming that the domain will be detached from your site in a few minutes.
While the domain is disconnected, you can still take the usual actions on your domain including:
- Add Professional Email.
- Transfer the domain to another account or registrar.
- Modify the DNS records.
Visit the All Domains page to access your disconnected domain’s settings.
Visiting the domain will show a parking page instead of the website:

To attach a disconnected domain to any website in your WordPress.com account:
- Visit your global dashboard at https://wordpress.com/sites.
- On the side, select “Domains“.
- Click on the domain you want to attach to a website.
- From the “Create a WordPress.com site” section at the top, you can attach your domain to one of your existing WordPress.com sites or a new site:
- Click the button labeled “Add a new site” to create a new site with its own plan subscription to use with the domain.
- Click the button labeled “Attach to an existing site” to select and link the domain to a site on which you are an administrator.
