Summing up newsletters

Whether you want a quick and simple free newsletter, the option to create a paid newsletter, or the ability to take full control of your email list and email campaigns with a custom newsletter, the choice is yours.

  • Use the WordPress.com Newsletter↗︎ feature (or Subscribe block on existing sites) when you want to automatically notify all of your subscribers about new posts on your site.
  • Set up a payment plan and use the Newsletter visibility setting on posts to offer a Paid Newsletter option.
  • Use the MailPoet plugin↗︎ for a custom newsletter that offers layout customization and automation, including subscriber segmentation, drip campaigns and more!

Choosing what’s right for you

When deciding which newsletter option is best for your needs, you should consider the following factors and ask yourself these questions:

  • Purpose of the newsletter:
    • What is the main goal of the newsletter?
    • Is it to inform, entertain, or promote products and services?
    • Will it be used for lead generation or to nurture existing customer relationships?
  • Audience:
    • Who are the target subscribers?
    • What are their preferences and expectations regarding newsletter content, design, and frequency?
  • Customization requirements:
    • How important is having the ability to fully customize all aspects of the newsletter?
    • Are there specific branding elements or design features that need to be included in the emails? Example: Logos, product photos, colors etc.
  • Budget:
    • What is the available budget for managing the newsletter?
    • Can you afford the cost of a plan upgrade, plugins or services, or is a free solution more suitable?
  • Time commitment:
    • How much time do you have to dedicate to creating, managing, and maintaining the newsletter?
    • Will you need a simple solution with minimal setup, or are you willing to invest more time for a robust solution?
  • Monetization:
    • Do you plan to generate revenue from the newsletter, either by charging for subscriptions or including sponsored content and advertising?
    • If so, what are the potential returns on investment?
  • Integration with other tools:
    • Will the newsletter need to be integrated with other marketing tools, such as analytics tools or WooCommerce?
    • Which options support the integrations or features you need?
  • Scalability:
    • As your website and subscriber base grow, can the chosen newsletter solution scale accordingly?
    • Will it be easy to transition to a more advanced option if needed?

By considering these factors and asking yourself these questions, you can make an informed decision on which newsletter option best aligns with your needs and goals.

While we can’t provide specific answers to many of these questions, as they depend on your unique circumstances and needs, we can assure you that one of the options presented in this course will suit your requirements. Here are a few final ideas to keep in mind:

  • You can monetize any of the options we’ve provided, if desired, but you also don’t have to monetize your newsletter if you don’t want to.
  • The Subscribe block is basic and doesn’t offer any integration options with external tools, but MailPoet has many integration options that you can look into.
  • List size flexibility. Unlimited new subscribers on any WordPress.com plan. If you want to import an existing list of more than 100 subscribers you can upgrade to any paid plan↗︎ for unlimited importing. Custom newsletters, such as with MailPoet, may have a cost as you reach certain subscriber thresholds.
  • You can also progress through these options as needed. Start with the free Subscribe block, add paid content once you’ve grown a bit, and move to MailPoet↗︎ when it best suits your needs.

Newsletters are a powerful way to quickly build and monetize a connection with your audience, and your WordPress.com site already has everything it needs to get you started.
