YouTube Video: Is There Only 1 Size in WP.com?
-
Hello and thank you.
Every time I embed a YouTube video and change the size of the video, the video invariably goes to a default size in a WordPress.com page or post. Here’s a screencast: http://www.screencast.com/t/bcTi8Ba9.
After adjusting the size and clicking “Update” to save it, the embed code converts to a different phrasing like this one seen here: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te7KW4K-00E?feature=player_detailpage%5D. I do not know what the brackets mean. Paragraph? Neither do I see in this new code any numbers referring to the size of the video. Very perplexing to me.
So, two things then:
One, how can I get the changes in size stick in a WP page or post?
Two, what do those brackets mean?
Three, why is the size of the video not indicated in the new converted embed code?Thank you.

The size of the video being displayed cannot exceed the maximum displayed image width for posts and pages in your theme. Are you clear on that? See here please http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/#video-customization-options

Timethief!!! You’ve done it again!!!
So it’s called a shortcode. Good to know.
Currently, the shortcode for that video is phrased just so:
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te7KW4K-00E?feature=player_detailpage%5D.
In your link, I found a sample of how the code should look when height and width are both customized:
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaNH56Vpg-A&w=320&h=240].
Notice how in the link that you sent me, the width is indicated with the “w=” and then the size; likewise for the height, “h=” and then the size. But in the link to the video that I embedded on my page, I see now indication of width, height, or size. So if I wanted to change the size of the video on my page, where in that code would I insert “w=350” and “h=300”? I am not getting enough information from that shortcode.
Thank you, Timethief!!!

Also, I don’t see an “edit” feature to go back and change something in my message. I misspelled the word “no.” Instead I wrote now. That’s not what I wanted meant to say. I need to find the edit option in these messages.

Hi there,
It was a bit difficult to see the text in that screencast. If you want to change the size of the Youtube video, you can add it at the end of the shortcode as seen here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube/#video-customization-options
If you still don’t see how, please provide me the post link and the width/height that you would like. I can provide you the shortcode that you can embed into your post!
Let me know if you have any questions with this!

Thanks, Grace, for taking the time to solve this. I did see that link yesterday, and it is very helpful; I’m keeping it around in my list of resources. But of the options presented there, the one I need is the 2nd one presented here, “To specify the width and height explicitly:
[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaNH56Vpg-A&w=320&h=240].”But when I go to “Edit” the shortcode on my page, the shortcode looks significantly different, like this: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB2Ad04mukI?feature=player_embedded%5D. I see no recognizable numbers that indicate H or W. Where would I put the H and W? Here is a screenshot:

Hi Mike,
Yes, I understand that. You will have to edit the link yourself. So instead of this
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB2Ad04mukI?feature=player_embedded%5D%5D
put:
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB2Ad04mukI&w=320&h=240%5D
You can change the numbers after w= and h= to your desire. Make sure you are using just the direct link to the Youtube video.
Cheers!
-
Wonderful, Grace! Thank you.
Your directions worked!! But I don’t know what you mean by “direct link.” You mean the URL and NOT the embed code? Not sure what you mean by direct link.
But now the video is no longer lined up at the left. It’s centered on the page, and I need it to be lined up at the left. Where in the shortcode do I insert alignment? Thanks.
-
If you are viewing the Youtube video, just take the URL you see in the address bar – not the embed code. You can see the instructions in the Youtube support guide here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/videos/youtube
As for the alignment you will have to add some HTML:
<div style="float:left;"> ADD THE SHORTCODE HERE </div> <div style="clear:both;height:1em;"></div>
Here’s an example:
<div style="float:left;"> [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB2Ad04mukI&w=320&h=240] </div> <div style="clear:both;height:1em;"></div>
Make sure you are using the Text Editor.
-
Grace, when I followed your instructions using the shortcode, I was able to customize the size of the video. That was great and important. To align the video to the left, you asked that I paste a direct link in the Text Editor along with “some HTML,” which I did. In the Text editor, I simply re-typed the code from your examples.
<div style=”float:left;”>
[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB2Ad04mukI&w=320&h=240%5D
</div>
<div style=”clear:both;height:1em;”></div>I’ve tried the sample HTML above and that didn’t work. In a preview of the page there was some HTML text visible.
But now I am confused on which code to use. You asked that I use the direct link, but then your example states “ADD THE SHORTCODE HERE.”
You directed me to use a shortcode, which I did. Though I changed the H & W, I used this one: [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB2Ad04mukI&w=320&h=240%5D.
-
Can you provide me the link to the post/page you added this on? There may be some messy HTML that’s preventing it from rendering.
-
-
Please note that the code you added is incorrect. I believe you entered the code into the Visual Editorand then switched to the Text Editor.
Please stay in the Text Editor when you are adding code.
Currently your code is this:
<div style="float: left;"></div> <div style="clear: both; height: 1em;"></div>
It should be this:
<div style="float:left;"> [youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BB2Ad04mukI&w=320&h=240] </div> <div style="clear:both;height:1em;"></div>
Please view the difference in the brackets.
-
Grace, that did it!!!
And you were right–I went first to Visual Editor, pasted it, then opened up Text Editor, thinking that because the text didn’t alter that it wouldn’t matter.
Thank you for your tenacity and valuable time.
Mike
