YouTube embed is not dispalyed correctly
-
Hi folks,
I just published a blog post with an YouTube embed, the embed is not rendered correctly. It’s bigger than usual and also covers the text below the video. This is the blog post: https://maxkatz.org/2020/09/11/video-how-to-build-an-app-to-send-a-custom-reply-to-a-twilio-text-message/
Any advice as why it’s happening?
I have an older blog post with a video and there it displays correctly: https://maxkatz.org/2020/08/20/video-build-a-no-code-contact-form-that-notifies-you-instantly-when-someone-submits-the-form/
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
It looks like this might be a bug with your theme – it specifically happens only if there are no widgets added to the sidebar, as on your site, and it’s happening with both Youtube and Vimeo embeds.
I’ve reported this to our developers to look into. I’ll update you here once I know more, but I’m afraid I can’t give a timeline on when it might be fixed.
For now I’d suggest you add a widget to the sidebar. Even just a HTML widget containing some commented-out code should do the trick.

Hi –
Thanks for your reply.
I embedded a video a few weeks ago and it worked and still works. You can see it here: https://maxkatz.org/2020/08/20/video-build-a-no-code-contact-form-that-notifies-you-instantly-when-someone-submits-the-form/.
Do you know why the older blog post renders the video OK?

Hi there,
There may have been an update that affected/prevented any future video embeds but not the videos that were currently embedded into your site.
It’s definitely something we are looking further into and will provide you an update once we hear back from the developers.
Thanks!

Adding an empty HTML widgets solves the embed problem but it creates another issue – it aligns all the content to the left.
I tried using a plain custom HTML block and it renders correctly:
<div style="text-align:center"> [youtube=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJWKWXUZF1Q&w=560&h=315] </div>
It works correctly in edit mode but when viewing the page, it shows the video in the center for a second and then shifts it to the left 🤷♂️

Don’t use a div for that, use a Youtube block instead: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/youtube-block/

Ok, so I found one solution until this issue is resolved. Changing alignment to ‘Wide width’.
-
Ah, that makes sense. The “full width” setting is one that works best with our newer themes that were designed with the block editor in mind. Because the Independent Publisher theme was released before the block editor was created, it does not work well with “full width” settings for blocks.
I’ve added that detail to the bug report, thank you for reporting back to us!

Does this issue impact only the current theme I use? If I switch to a different them, a theme that was made for the new Blocks editor, this issue won’t be there?
-
We believe it only impacts your current theme.
As we dig further, we may find a few more affected.
