    Hi, im starting a redesign for a client. They want their website transfered to a wordpress site. Whats the best process for me to move their domain to wordpress, do they need to transfer me their domain? Straight out of college and first site im doing.

    Whats the best process for me to move their domain to wordpress

    So, if your client has a domain that they want to use at WordPress.com that is currently hosted elsewhere, they have the option to map or transfer that domain.

    First, you can transfer the domain without having to purchase a paid plan. However, using a domain at WordPress.com without a plan prevents you from making the domain primary. When someone types in your custom domain, it will automatically forward to your WordPress.com subdomain:

    Otherwise, they can purchase a WordPress.com plan and set their domain as the primary domain.

    The biggest factors they’ll need to consider would be who they want to host their domain, how much the domain host currently costs compared to the domain only or domain + plans packages we offer here, and whether or not they want to host their domain and site at the same place.

    If you transfer the domain to WordPress.com, we’ll manage the domain. Assuming you want the domain primary, you’ll pay for the mapping and the plan here (domain is included within the plan price for the first year).

    But, if you keep the domain with your current host and map the domain to WordPress.com, your current host will continue to manage the domain and you’ll still need to pay them for hosting your domain.

    Can I set them up a wordpress account and start rebuilding their website without a domain on wordpress?

    If so,

    Once the website is created can i transfer the domain to the website that i have just built?

    Is this best practice? My reasoning is that I could build the redesign whilst their existing site can stay live. What is the usual process?

    yes, you can do this, make use of the free plan option to build the website and customize as much as you want. Be aware however that if you plan on adding custom CSS, you may need to upgrade the plan right away.

    I would say there is no specific right way to do things, usually consider your needs and your end goal. In this instance, the fact that you want the other site to be active while you rebuild the site somewhere else makes it sensible to only transfer the domain after you are done building. It’s also good to make a final decision like mapping or transferring the domain once you are sure that you are comfortable using the WordPress platform,
