How do I setup auto renewal (and payment) for this wordpress domain?

  • Title pretty much says it all. I want to make sure the domain JamesYarnell.com continues running beautifully. The domain is registered with WordPress. Are there monthly/annual fees due in order to keep it running? How do I setup auto payments? What else do I need to do in order to ensure the site continues running?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there,

Auto-renewal is already enabled for your domain. So, you’re on the right track in ensuring it remains active. However, I noticed that the domain is registered under a different account than the one you’re contacting us from.

To manage the domain and update payment information, you’ll need to access that other account of yours. If you’re unsure about the account details or how to access it, no worries. We have an Account Recovery guide that can walk you through the process. You can find it here: https://wordpress.com/support/account-recovery/

Let us know if you have any more questions or if there’s any other way we can assist you. We’re here to help.

  • That’s strange. I’m literally looking at the admin panel at https://jamesyarnell.com/wp-admin/. Doesn’t this mean I’m in the account and able to update payment info and manage the domain? If so, what are the steps to update payment for auto-renewals from the admin panel?

  • Hi @dscates2000,

That’s strange. I’m literally looking at the admin panel at https://jamesyarnell.com/wp-admin/

The site isn’t hosted here, so its wp-admin panel isn’t directly connected to our domains and services. If it helps, here’s the difference between the free WordPress code and our managed hosting:

    https://wordpress.com/go/website-building/wordpress-com-vs-wordpress-org/

But the domain is indeed registered through us. Can you log out, then log in again using the email address that gets renewal reminders? That will be the correct account. If necessary, we do have an account recovery process you can use.

  • Ok so is it WordPress.org that I should log into or WordPress.com? Does it appear that I’m contacting you via the right account now?

  • Also to add to my questions asked in my last reply, if I leave this as is, what will happen to the domain when it expires next month (November)? Will I be billed? What’s the charge? I want to make sure the domain doesn’t go up for auction at the very least.

  • Hi there,

Ok so is it WordPress.org that I should log into or WordPress.com? Does it appear that I’m contacting you via the right account now?

I think it will help if I clarify how things got to be this way based on what I see on our end.

In 2019, the domain jamesyarnell.com was transferred to WordPress.com (to your other WordPress.com account, not this one) and for a while you had your site jamesyarnell.com hosted with us directly.

In 2021 it appears the settings for the domain were changed to point traffic to another provider. At this point you appear to have switched to a self-hosted WordPress site, which are sites that you create on a “traditional web host” like Bluehost, GoDaddy, etc.

However, while settings were added to the domain to connect it to an outside host, the domain itself is hosted here still. Changing the settings does not automatically transfer the domain, since that is a separate process.

Your .org site is not connected to WordPress.com in any way. We use a custom login system for .com accounts, so your .org login credentials will not work here.

if I leave this as is, what will happen to the domain when it expires next month (November)? Will I be billed? What’s the charge? I want to make sure the domain doesn’t go up for auction at the very least.

As mentioned by my colleague, auto-renew appears to be set on this domain, so it has already renewed, and is in good standing until 2024. Nothing to worry about there.

However, this is not a long-term solution, since at some point your card on file will hit it’s expiry date and we can no longer renew. If you do not recall how to log in to your other account you can fill out the form here to get assistance from our Account Recovery team: https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=recovery

On that form you will be asked to provide a transaction ID for your purchase, which you can typically find on your credit card statement. More info on how to find that here: https://wordpress.com/support/billing-history/#retrieving-a-transaction-id

Once you are connected to the correct account we are happy to help you with managing your domain. Thanks!

  • Here’s the problem. I think I accidentally let the domain expire. I received the copied email below from Bluehost (where I host my sites). Maybe I hosted JamesYarnell.com at Bluehost at some point (I can’t remember). Anyway the below email from Bluehost says that my current registrar for JamesYarnell.com is AUTOMATTIC, INC. I have no clue what company this is. Could it be a company that bought the domain JamesYarnell.com after I let it expire?

This is a courtesy reminder that the domain name registration for jamesyarnell.com expires in less than 29 days days. Please contact your current registrar, AUTOMATTIC INC., to renew your domain before it expires. If the domain is allowed to expire, all of the important services that Bluehost provides will no longer work properly, including your website, email addresses, and more.

While it is not required, we highly recommend that you keep your domain registration and hosting in the same place. This will allow you to manage the various settings for both services within the same cPanel, making it easier for you to stay on top of things. If you would like for Bluehost to renew your domain, please consider transferring the registration to us by following the link below:

  • Hi again,

That looks like an automated message sent by your host, who can also see the expiry date of the domain. By coincidence they sent that the same day that the domain auto-renewed, so it looks these were ships passing in the night. But their email was well-intentioned since it prompted you to contact us.

However, as I’ve mentioned above, this domain is not under your @dscates2000 login on WordPress.com, but under a different login. To administer to that domain, transfer it, or keep payment details up to date, you will need to regain access.

You can do that by filling out the form here: https://wordpress.com/wp-login.php?action=recovery

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
