Do I need to add my new blog to Google or other search engines?

  • I am very new to this. I just created a blog on WordPress-dot-com and I’m wondering if I need to do anything to have it appear on Google?

PS. So far if I take some phrase from one of my blog posts and search for it in double-quotes, Google doesn’t find anything. So I’m concerned if my new blog is even visible from the search engines.

  • Hi there!

It takes a couple of weeks before search engines display new sites.

To explain how this works: Google’s robots (and other search engines) “crawl” the web daily looking for new content. When they find a new site, it takes a little while for it to be displayed properly when searched for by people. Note that you can help search engines find you by submitting your new site to their indexation services. Google, for example, has a tool called “Search Console” which allows you to submit your site: https://search.google.com/search-console/welcome.

You can learn more about these tools here: https://wordpress.com/support/webmaster-tools/.

  • Thanks. Following your suggestions I was able to add my site to both Google and Bing. I wasn’t aware of the two-week waiting period. So let me see what happens after that.

  • It just takes some time before the search engines notice a newly published site – thousands are created every day :).

Verifying it, as you did, will speed that process up.
