First Friday

New blogger? Welcome! Share a link to your first post, say hello to other new faces, and find your first few readers.

For other help:
If you’re not new and are looking for support or feedback, the Community Pool is the place for you!

For technical questions, visit the WordPress.com Support Forums.

To learn more about blogging, take a Blogging U. course.

To find, copy, and paste your link:
Head to your blog’s home page — not your dashboard, your blog itself. Click on the title of your post to open the individual post.

Highlight and copy the URL you see in your browser’s address bar, and paste the entire URL into a comment here.

Welcome to First Friday, a weekly open thread where any new blogger can share a link to his or her very first post with the larger WordPress.com community. To share your first post with us, copy and paste the link right into a comment here. If you’re not new, you can still be a part of First Fridays: visit a link or two, and leave the blogger a like or comment.

Please don’t use this as a space to share your first post…. that you published three years ago; ditto for simply sharing your latest post. Posts should have been published within the last month, and should be your first post. We’ll remove other posts to keep this space focused for new bloggers.

We ask that you help us keep this space focused by following a few additional guidelines:

  • We encourage anyone who shares a link to visit a few other bloggers. New readers for all!
  • When commenting, the third time is not the charm: don’t share the same link repeatedly, or in multiple First Friday threads. We’ll remove repeat posts.
  • Link directly to your new post, rather than to your blog generally — it makes it that much easier for folks to like the post or leave you comments.
  • Avoid repeated “Follow for a follow!” comments. (Tip: if you’re trying to build a readership, it’s much more effective to visit and comment on individual bloggers.)
  • To keep from losing your place while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on links to open them in a new tab or window.

      1. Thank you so much! I love yours too. I’ve been to both England and Taiwan! I haven’t been to Taiwan since I was little though, but I can’t wait to read more from your blog 🙂

    1. Welcome 🙂

I noticed that you still have some placeholder text in your blog’s sidebar, on the right side — you can remove or edit that by going to My Site > Customize > Widgets. Look for the Text Widget!

    1. Welcome! FYI: that link goes to your dashboard, which is private, so people won’t be able to see your site. The simplest way to get the public link is to go to your blog’s main page and click on the post title. Then, copy the address you see in your browser’s address bar and use that. Here’s your site: https://unsinkablemollym.wordpress.com/

      1. Hi livinggaybrisbane I probably need to fix it as I accidentally created a blank post. Maybe that’s why there a space. Thanks for letting me know 😊 I changed my theme again. I think I like it better than the other one. What do you think?

      2. Oh yea I like this theme much better, its really appealing to scroll through. The blog roll on the side is a good idea too, I clicked on two of the links haha. would you mind having a look at my blog and letting me know what you think? livinggaybrisbane.wordpress.com

      3. I honestly don’t know what blog roll is about 😂😂 It’s part of the theme template. I like that your blog is heading towards acceptance of gay-lesbian community. I have gay and lesbian friends and they are all great. I’m looking forward to your blog posts showing how smart and talented LGBTs are. As to theme, maybe try something colorful and artistic. But it depends on your personal style though. Happy blogging! 😊

      4. Thanks, I’ve been trying to find a theme that fits the image I have in my head, but I may have to buy one. If you know anyone in the LGBT community that might be interested in my posts, please share it with them. I want to highlight all sorts of things LGBT eventually but I’m just getting started.

    1. Just looked at your blog — it has a nice clean look, suitable for a blog about parenting. And your articles are interesting and well written.

Here are some suggestions for improvement:

If you wish, you can change your background color from white to something else. Go into your Site Admin — the last one on the flip out bar on the left — then go to Appearance, then Background. Try a few of the Background colors available; you may prefer that look to an all-white border.

You may want to install a Comments button on your About page — if you can. (Not sure why the current themes don’t have one. Maybe replaced by the Contact Me thing?) And do install a Like button for your posts. It’s in the Settings; you can contact WP Support for help with this.

When you go to Site Admin, then Appearance, you’ll see a button that says Widgets. Go to the Widgets, do a drag & drop to install the Recent Posts bar. This makes blogs much more user-friendly. Otherwise a person has to scroll…and scroll…and scroll… down to see past articles. A Recent Posts list gives visitors the titles of your last posts—you can set the number shown — so they can click on and read what interests them.

I didn’t check this on your blog, but if you don’t already have a Categories widget installed, do this. Using categories and tags on your posts is a way of inviting visitors and it’s your long-term filing system. I have my categories displayed as a drop-down list. Check out https://wordpress.com/tags/ for more ideas about C&Ts. WP allows up to fifteen—make use of them to share your posts.
