Community Pool

The place for advice, feedback, and friendly blogging chatter.

Have you just published a new post and are dying for some feedback? Did you recently start your blog and could use some layout or design advice from your more seasoned peers?

Tap into the wisdom of The Daily Post blogging community and leave your question here in the comments. Others can then click through and offer input either on your site, or in the comments here (feel free to indicate which you’d prefer).

To help us make the Community Pool a productive space for discussion, here are some tips you might find useful:

TIP: To keep from losing your place in the comment thread while you visit others’ blogs, right-click on a link to open it in a new tab or window.

  • While you’re not required to, we encourage everyone who requests feedback to also reply to at least one or two other bloggers who need some help. Spread the love!
  • The Community Pool comments section can get quite big — and starting duplicate threads doesn’t help. Thanks for not posting the same question more than once!
  • If you’re looking for quality feedback, be as specific as you can. Questions about a particular post tend to draw more comments than ones about entire blogs. Questions about specific design elements are more likely to be answered than ones asking for general layout advice.
  • We discourage leaving links without a more substantive message or question. These are often overlooked by other bloggers, and we frequently remove them to make the comment reading experience smoother.
  • Please keep all comments civil and constructive. The idea is to have fun — it’s a pool, after all!
  • If you haven’t looked at our Commenting Guidelines in a while, now might be a good time.
  • No running on the deck.

  1. I’ve been running my blog for a few months now, so any and all comments are welcome. But I’m also looking for some buzz in advance of launching my new ‘Sects comic strip. I have posted a couple of teasers recently on my blog, so comments on those posts are particularly welcomed!

  2. Hey, just posted this on my blog and had a question for other writers:

    eggshells

I did a lot of time skipping throughout this post and found it tricky to stay in the right tense. I like the feel of present tense in my flashbacks. There is one section where I do use past tense in relation to the present story line. Anyway, did this work? Would there be a better way to do it? Thanks for any feedback.

    3. Hi – I think you told your story perfectly and powerfully. Did you take the photo of the eggshells at the top? I really liked it as an image for your post.

I agree with you about the feel of the present tense. As I remember, in Spanish they do something similar – they place an incident in the past, by using the past tense to introduce it, then they switch to the present to move around within the incident or experience. I always thought it brought the listener/reader closer. Better than the way you have to write English in exams – ‘once you’re in the past, stay in the past’. If you’d used the past tense in your post there would have been a distance to it. And, after all, in our memories we replay experiences in the present inside our heads, as if we’re watching a film. We don’t separate our memories from ourselves as we are now.

I hope your father is ok and that you get to store away a lot more memories together.

      1. Thanks! I didn’t take that picture. Just edited it to fit the style of my brand.

That’s a great point about how we replay memories. I think thats why I like it in present tense.

Thanks for you kind words about my father. I hope so too.

  5. Hi everyone,
I have in the past asked for feed back on my blogs, a couple of people offered advice, for reasons I guess best known to myself I am failing to improve my blogs and my posts.
I am trying hard to get a course which can help me with computer skills which seem to be a major problem making it hard to improve.

  6. Am a novice blogger and have just posted by 10th entry. My purpose, initially, was to prepare for a Social Media class I am teaching. At times it can feel a bit like “Radio Nowhere”, so before proceeding with the blog – I find I am really enjoying the writing process – I was wondering if some of you wouldn’t mind offering some advice on: (a) my blog appearance; (b) content; (c) any tips for keeping the momentum going.

Am I missing something basic? http://crowleym.com/ Happy to do the same for anyone else here. Thanks. Mike

  8. Hi,
    http://solomonkappala.wordpress.com/

This is my blog, mostly dealing with Software Testing. I have changed the themes few times before come on this theme. But open to any suggestions. Still exploring how the layout needs to be. And also please suggest which is the best way to write /edit the blog–through MS-Word or online on wordpress as I am not still happy as I am not getting Uniformity of the text throughout the blog.

    1. I like quick, funny reads, so your puns are great for that. I made a comment on your site, though it isn’t half as witty as your puns.

I didn’t see a follow button. I may just have missed it, but if not, you might want to add the widget in your sidebar. Another suggestion is to just put up a few puns each day and post more often. That way followers can get a quick chuckle in their readers.

    1. Your site is very clear, although I couldn’t find the ‘about’ information. It could be clearer, and if you don’t have it, I would suggest adding it as I always like to read this when sites have a lot of posts. Good luck

  12. Hello, I would love some feedback on my blog. I’m new-ish to wordpress but had a bloodspot blog for 5 years. I haven’t been able to build up the same following here that I had on my last blog but am much happier with the layout and content of my current blog. I would love feedback about what you did or didn’t like about my blog and any ideas that you may have about increasing readership for me.
