Create a Social Links Menu

A social links menu can make it easy for your website visitors to find you on social media by displaying attractive icons for services like Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and many more. This guide will show you how to create a social links menu.

Add a Social Menu

Follow the steps below to add a social links menu to your site.

To determine which section of this guide to follow, visit your dashboard and check under Appearance on the left side. If you see Editor, use the Site Editor section of this guide. Otherwise, use the WP Admin or Customizer instructions.

In the Site Editor, display a social links menu by inserting the Social Icons block. Follow these steps to add a new social links menu:

1. Visit your dashboard.
2. Go to Appearance → Editor.
3. Select the Template or Template Part you want to edit, or click the preview of your site to open the Site Editor.
4. Open List View at the top-left corner of your screen (it’s the icon that looks like three horizontal lines above each other.)
5. Select a position and click the + Block Inserter.
6. Search for the Social Icons block and click to add it.
7. Click the + icon and select the icon for the first social media profile you wish to add.
   • You can search for a specific social media network or click the “Browse all” link to view all available social networks.
8. Click the newly added icon and enter the URL of your social media profile. Press enter/return on your keyboard to submit, or click the “Apply” icon (represented by a curved arrow).
9. Repeat for as many icons as you wish to add.
10. Click the “Save” button to save your changes.

On sites with classic themes, you can add social menus using WP-Admin using the following steps:

1. Visit your dashboard.
2. Go to Appearance → Menus.
3. Ensure the correct menu is selected at the top of the screen, or click the “Create a new menu” link.
4. Click the “Custom Links” section under the “Add menu items” header.
5. In the URL field enter the link to your first social media profile.
6. In the Link Text field, enter the name of the profile (this will not display on the site, but it’s helpful for you to remember which links you’ve added.)
7. Click the “Add to Menu” button.
8. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for each social media profile you want to add.
9. Under the Menu Settings header locate the “Display Location” option and check the box for Social Menu.
10. Click the “Save Menu” button.

On sites with classic themes, you can add a social links menu using the Customizer using one of two methods:

• Insert a Social Icons block. See this guide to learn more.
• If the theme supports a social links menu, use the steps below to add social links to your menu.

To create a social links menu, follow these steps:

1. Visit your dashboard.
2. Go to Appearance → Customize.
3. Click the Menus tab.
4. Click Create New Menu or select an existing menu to edit.
5. Ensure that the checkbox for Social Links/Icons is checked under Menu Locations:

Click the Social Menu option to display your new menu with social links.

6. To add your first social media link to the menu, click the “+ Add Items” button.
7. Next, select the Custom Links menu item type:

Click the Custom Links header to expose the URL and Link Text input fields.

8. Here, fill in the two fields:
   • URL: Add the link address for one of your social media profiles. For example, if the link to your Facebook profile is https://www.facebook.com/WordPresscom, you would paste that into the URL field.
   • Link Text: Type a name for the social media site, such as Facebook or Instagram.
9. Once you have filled in both fields, click the “Add to Menu” button.
10. Repeat the above steps until all the social media profiles you wish to use have been added to the menu:
