Last updated:

Introduction

Creating a website, whether it’s your first or your tenth, is a journey. It’s a process using technology that by nature constantly evolves. The goal of our learning hub is to make sure you have access to the courses, webinars, videos, and support guides you need to smoothly reach your goals.

Many people make the mistake of winging it when it comes to building a website. Why is it a mistake? Because website creation uses some of the fastest growing and changing technology in the tech world. What you knew yesterday could very well no longer apply a month from now. Plus, creating a website without a plan is a recipe for frustration and slow progress.

This is why we’ve created our learning hub for you. The comparatively small amount of time it will take to work through the materials relevant to your needs will save you hours of time and missteps in the long run. It’s also a resource that you can return to at any time: you don’t need to learn everything before taking action. In fact, we recommend that you use our materials alongside your website creation process. Digging in whilst doing is the best way.

So a huge high-five! Because you’ve made the right decision to invest in your learning and your success by joining us here.

Inside this course

  • Quick Start Guide: This is your fast track for creating a website. We’ve stripped it back to the basics, piece by piece, with handy links to our detailed support guides, lessons, and webinars for those moments when your curiosity kicks in, or you’re feeling a bit stuck. Since this lesson is more about the what than the how, it will require less updates over time as it won’t be impacted as much by changes to the software.
  • Quick Clips: Pro Tips: This lesson is all about giving you the visuals through short videos that you may need to figure out a neat trick or an elusive setting or for a fun Aha! moment to fill a gap. Since this lesson is demonstrating how the software works for specific tasks, there is a higher chance of them becoming outdated, which is why we split them up into short segments to make removal and updates easier.
  • Learning Hub Roadmap: This lesson provides an overview of our learning hub, along with summaries of our learning resources to help you with all your website building needs, and acts as a guide on what path to take based on your unique needs.
  • Planning: This is an entire module dedicated to various aspects of planning a website and understanding how different components of a website function. These lessons cover more theory than technical how-to. While any given lesson throughout our entire site is optional, we highly recommend reviewing the lessons in this module for a deeper understanding of how your website works and specifically, how it works within the WordPress.com environment. We also cross-link back to these lessons from other courses when we feel that the information provided is particularly beneficial to enhance the materials.
  • Feedback and Discussion: This section is all about you. You can leave comments to start discussions with other students taking this same course. We also hope that you’ll help us out by completing our end of course survey provided in this section, it’s how we learn to improve meeting your needs.
  • Got that go-getter spirit? We’ve got a treasure trove of courses and webinars on specialized topics at your fingertips. They’re packed with expertise, all ready and waiting. Come and go as you please. Jump around. Complete lessons in any order you like. You’re in the driver’s seat.

Before you start

Before we dig in, remember to keep our Resources section in mind. You’ll find the link in the right sidebar of every lesson. This section of our learning hub covers a range of information, including a glossary, FAQs and more, that is beneficial for all website creation journeys regardless of what you’re building or why.

WordPress is a dynamic, open source software that loves to keep us all on our toes with updates. These updates can bring changes to how things look and work, and from time to time there might be some differences you come across in our lessons. Take a look at our Help center or Support guides for more resources, whenever you notice that something may have changed.

Pro-tip:
Most links throughout our learning hub will open in the same tab, unless they include an arrow like this: ↗︎ If you prefer to open links in a new tab rather than leaving the lesson you’re on, press and hold the Control key on your keyboard (Command on Mac) then click the link.

When you come across images, look for outline circles on the images. They’re tooltips that will help to identify sections of the images. If they don’t have tooltips, they can be enlarged by clicking on them, or right click and open in a new tab.

Also, please be sure to fill out our surveys. Each survey allows you to choose which course you’re completing the survey for, so you can fill them out for every single course you take if you like (which would be wonderful). We keep them short and the information you provide in these surveys helps us with several things:

  • We get a better understanding of your starting point
  • It provides clarity on what your needs and expectations are
  • It helps us assess if we’re meeting your needs and expectations
  • It guides us in improving and expanding the resources we’re providing to help you
  • It allows us to provide feedback to our developers for product improvements

Thank you in advance for helping us, to help you.
