Six Steps to Building an Events Page with WordPress Blocks

Whether you’re hosting and selling webinars or organizing conferences and meet-ups, there are many benefits to building an events page on your WordPress website. However, figuring out how to make one can be challenging.

Fortunately, various WordPress blocks and plugins can make the process significantly easier. With features such as calendars and registration forms to countdowns and booking systems, your event page can be a hub for you and your customers.

In this post, we’ll start by discussing what an events page is and the different uses of one. Then, we’ll walk you through how to build this page in WordPress using various tools and blocks. Let’s get started!

Why You Should Consider Creating an Events Page for Your WordPress Site

Having an events page on your business website can help increase attendance. It provides your users with a convenient, simple way of confirming their participation and obtaining all the necessary information about an event:

There are also many different ways to use an events page. For example, you can utilize it to inform your audience what, where, and when an event is, as well as provide them with registration and sign-up details:

You can also post a calendar view of your events so that customers can plan for and attend upcoming happenings. You can even share photos and videos that showcase past meet-ups, as well as links to other relevant content.

Another way to leverage event pages in WordPress is with a countdown. This feature can help build anticipation around the gathering, reminding users about it and encouraging more sign-ups.

How to Build an Events Page With WordPress Blocks (In 6 Steps)

Before we get started, it’s important to note that there are multiple quality plugins for creating an events page. For this tutorial, we’ll show you how to make this page using the Block Editor and include essential elements such as a calendar, countdown, and booking system.

There are various tools and plugins you can use for each of these elements. However, we’ll be using the Events and Events Countdown blocks, as well as Eventbrite and Calendly. Both of these blocks are available on WordPress.com as well as any self-hosted site that uses Jetpack.

These tools make creating and customizing your events page quick and easy. In addition, they’re automatically included with WordPress Business, Premium, and plugin-enabled plans.

Step 1: Create a WordPress Events Page and Add the Events Block

To get started, you’ll first need to create your Events page in WordPress. You can do this by navigating to Pages > Add New. You can name the page “Events”, then add any relevant details and copy:

Next, insert the Events block by clicking on the Add Block button and searching for “events”:

This WordPress block lets you display a card for each event. However, note that this may not be the best approach if you have a lot of gatherings to show, as the process can be time-consuming. For that setup, you may want to use Eventbrite, which we’ll discuss in a moment.

Once you insert the block, you can add the event title, date, time, location, and description:

After inputting the necessary details, you can customize the card’s alignment and adjust the text settings. For example, if you want to change the text color, you can do so to the right of the screen under Color settings.

You can also add background and text color to each element of the card by highlighting the text, clicking on the down arrow icon, then selecting Highlight:

If you want to add an image, you can also select Inline image from this menu. Finally, to change the appearance or focal point of the graphic, you can adjust the settings to the right-hand side of the screen.

Step 2: Create Your Event(s) Using Eventbrite

Suppose you’re looking for a little more advanced functionality, such as the option to sell tickets to your gatherings. In this scenario, we suggest using event-related plugins and tools.

We recommend signing up for Eventbrite. This website lets you quickly and easily create events that you can display and promote on your website.

After entering your basic information, Eventbrite will bring you to an onboarding page:

You can either skip this step or tell the platform a little more about your business. Next, you can enter your event information, including a title, category, location, and date and time:

When you finish, click on Save & Continue. Next, you can add an event image and description:

You can then add elements such as a Zoom link if the gathering is virtual and other essential details. The platform also lets you create tickets if it’s a paid event.

When you’re done, click on Publish Event > Publish Now in the top right-hand corner.

Step 3: Add the Eventbrite Block to Your Events Page

To enable users to register for your events directly from your website, you can use the Eventbrite block. Simply click on the Add Block button (the plus icon) in the Block Editor, then search for “eventbrite”:

You can also type “/eventbrite” directly into the Paragraph block, then press your Enter key. After you insert the Eventbrite Checkout block, you can add the event URL to the text field, then click on Embed:

You can find this URL in your Eventbrite dashboard:

After you embed the event URL, you can customize the block settings. For example, you can change the alignment and styling of the WordPress element:

You can explore the various options using the toolbar menu at the top of the block. When you’re done, be sure to save your changes.

Step 4: Create a Calendly Account

If you have multiple upcoming events, you might consider displaying them on your WordPress site in a list view. There are a handful of ways you can do this.

We recommend Calendly. This is free online appointment scheduling software that can be incredibly helpful for a wide range of events and bookings:

You can sign up for an account by entering your email and selecting the Sign Up button.

Next, follow the prompts to complete the account setup process.

When you’re finished, you’ll be redirected to your Calendly dashboard:

You can select various event types on this screen, create new meetings and gatherings, and find your Calendly account dashboard URL. Add as many events as you’d like.

Step 5: Insert the Calendly Block

Once your event calendar is created, you can insert the Calendly block into your WordPress events page. Click on the Add Block button or type “/calendly” followed by your Enter key:

After you insert the block, paste your Calendly web address or embed code, then select the Embed button:

You can embed the code for a single event from your Calendly dashboard or your entire Calendly web address to display all upcoming gatherings.

Once you embed the link, it will display a preview of what the events list will look like:

When users click on an event, it will display a calendar view. Remember to save your changes before moving on to the last step.

Step 6: Add an Event Countdown

As we discussed earlier, adding an event countdown can help build anticipation and excitement leading up to your gatherings. To do this, you can use the Event Countdown block.

To get started, place your cursor where you want to insert the countdown on the page, click on the Add Block button, then search for “event countdown”:

Once you’ve inserted the block, you can name the event, then select a date and time:

After you finish filling in all the details, you can preview how the countdown looks on the front end of your site by saving your changes, then selecting Preview:

That’s it! You now have all the essential elements to create an events page in WordPress.
