I’m not entirely sure how this works do I need to buy a domain name as well as pay for a website
-
What is the upfront cost of getting a free domain name that is then auto charged annually from after the first year

Hi there, I’ve merged your topics since they both address the same thing.
Please take a moment to read the Terms of Service you agreed to when you signed up to ensure your intended website can comply with the WordPress.com Terms of Service https://wordpress.com/tos/ and User Guidelines https://wordpress.com/support/user-guidelines/
Let me also point you to our support guide on mature content and what is allowed on WordPress.com https://wordpress.com/support/mature-content/
Violation of these can lead to a permanent suspension of your website here, so before you get started on setting up your site, please first read those documents.
As far as hosting, hosting on WordPress.com is free; you pay for feature upgrades. Domains are included for the first year on any annual upgrade plan but are charged separately in addition to the upgrade plan from the second year. You need to have an upgrade plan to use a custom domain.
You can see the plan pricing and domain costs here:

– click My Gravatar
– click the letter G by your image
– Select a more appropriate ratingThanks in advance.
