Unmake Website but Keep Domain

  • Hi, I want to unmake this website but keep the domain. I paid for the domain with the intention to host the actual website through tumblr. I did NOT buy my domain so that it would redirect to [domainname].wordpress.com, and at no point in buying it did it say it would redirect there unless I purchased an upgraded plan. I JUST want the domain. I didn’t mean to make the actual website through wordpress, I was just exploring my options and didn’t realize this wouldn’t be reversible. Trying to fix this is about to bring me to tears. Please help.

    WP.com: Yes
    Jetpack: No
    Correct account: Yes

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to moderators and staff)

  • basically can I cancel my “free annual plan” and just keep the domain, which I purchased? this was such a misleading process.

  • oh!!! ok I got impatient and frustrated and this appears to have resolved itself. for anyone having a similar problem, I updated my DNS records (for anyone redirecting to tumblr specifically, I followed these instructions here: https://help.tumblr.com/hc/en-us/articles/231256548-Custom-Domains and these here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/custom-dns/ ) and it took a bit over an hour for the changes to take effect, during which time I thought it wasn’t working. WordPress was not in fact holding me hostage in a way that required a staff member to fix (unless someone did, in which case thank you).

  • Hi there,

I can confirm the domain settings are correct and I can see your Tumblr site. It does take a few hours (up to 24+) for the settings to sort themselves out, so its’ normal for them to not work right away, but to start working after a short wait

basically can I cancel my “free annual plan” and just keep the domain, which I purchased? this was such a misleading process.

I don’t recommend deleting the WordPress.com site, you need it in order to be able to access your domain settings. If the site were to be deleted for example, it would not be possible to adjust the settings if they were to need an update.

Instead you can set the site to “private” in the visibility settings here, which will take it offline: https://wordpress.com/settings/general/

Hope that helps. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
