Site layout/theme

  • I am new to WordPress, having built sites using Frontpage for 20 years. I am really struggling with not being able to design the layout of my own pages – desperately trying to find the most customisable template that will allow me to actually put text and images where I want them to be. Is there any very simple and very custimisable template I can use for this?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Many thanks for your swift reply…

I keep looking at these themes, but I just can’t find one that suits – I am trying hard not to expect flexibility and to be content with something pre-prepared. Actually, I would be happy enough with just the twenty eleven theme that allowed me to alter the header image for each page! Doesn’t seem too much to ask – but I don’t think it will let me….

    Thanks again…

  • Hi again,

It seems as though having different header image per page is possible with the Twenty Eleven theme, as you can see here in the demo:

    https://twentyelevendemo.wordpress.com/

This theme is available to all plans on WordPress.com, so if you are interested go ahead and visit the following link:

    https://wordpress.com/theme/twentyeleven

Select “Active this design” in the top right of the Overview, select the site you wish to assign it to and hit “Activate” then “Customize site” and your on your way!

You will now be in the Customizer for your site, if you would prefer to head back to your main My Sites dashboard to add content, hit the X in the top left of the Customizer, then select the My Sites tab in the top left of the next screen and there you go!

If you run into any troubles feel free to pop back in and let us know where your at.

    Cheers

  • OK! I have found ‘Set Featured Image’ – which seems to do the trick.

    Many thanks for your help.

  • Oh dear – when I view the site in ‘Customise’ the image I set as ‘featured’ doesn’t appear – it just uses header image I have set for the home page.

I am clearly very confused! I realise I just don’t understand the different views that WordPress gives me when I go to ‘Preview’ or ‘ View my site’ – sometimes this shows me the actual page I’ve created, and sometimes just the theme with some random picture. I clearly need a tutorial!

    Sigh…

  • Ignore last message – realise I hadn’t ‘published’ the site – hence the views not showing my content. Getting there…. thanks for staying with me on this!

  • @rustlandorguk – how is everything coming along? Let me know if your running into any further troubles, I am happy to help:)
