I’m sorry but I cannot see what you see. I can locate the theme setup instructions at https://wordpress.com/theme/cubic but the size of the featured image in the Cubic theme is not stated there.
I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question

Hi –
I can see what you are referring to on the front page. Please verify that those featured images where the black boxes display are the correct size.
On the instructions shared by timethief, you’ll want to scroll to the bottom of the page. Here you’ll find the exact specs needed.
Quick Specs (all measurements in pixels)
Featured Images are 2000 wide by 1500 high.
