Problem uploading images – system changed in last week?

  • The way images are uploaded on my blog seems to have changed since last weekend. I am trying to upload photos but they are appearing in massive sizes even when use my usual selection of medium.
I am selecting ‘ link to: media file’ and ‘size: medium 300×200’.
However this is the HTML that appears, which has the wrong sizes and is linking to an ‘attachment page’.

[caption id="attachment_894" align="alignleft" width="428"]<img src=”http://seventeenbysix.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/dsc_0119.jpg?w=428″ alt=”De-scaling a fish for dinner, Cabo de la Vela ” width=”428″ height=”640″ class=”size-large wp-image-894″ /> De-scaling a pargo fish for dinner, Cabo de la Vela. I fixed another image by manually playing around with the HTML but obviously that’s not satisfactory. What’s going on? Any pointers appreciated. Thanks

  • Similar problem here. No option to insert image at full column width, not able to re-size images manually in the editor with Chrome (works in Firefox) big images are distorted to fit the column width in Chrome and just spills out of the column width in Firefox. It’s all horrible. Just come back to my blog after a few months so not sure when this all started.

  • I was used to using the previous way of adding photos, and I do not find this new way to be an improvement at all. There seem to be several extra steps now. It takes longer than it used to. I also see photos belonging to others who share the same platform. I don’t need to see them and I don’t really like it that other people can see my photos, either.
Is there any way that we can opt out of this new way and continue to work as we had been doing?

  • I can’t upload images at all when I am in the writing post-mode, so to speak. I must go to media library, upload photos, then return to the post I’m writing and only then can I insert photos that are already in the media library. But I can’t upload photos from my computer directly when I’m writing a post. (I use Chrome.) When I try to ‘drag’ a photo from the computer to the thing that inserts the photo into the post, a red circle with a red line through is shown, which I assume is some kind of error message. Some days ago it worked, but no more (although I absolutely preferred the old way of choosing a picture in a list, clicking, inserting, which was easy compared to this complicated dragging procedure that goes wrong all the time because my fingers are too clumsy).

  • @lizfergusonmontrealgazette – I am a bit confused. The Montreal Gazette appears to be a VIP account on WordPress.com. You should be contacting your VIP Support staff directly.

Everyone else, please read this WordPress.com Announcement about the new Media uploader. http://en.blog.wordpress.com/2012/11/29/seamless-media/ And I will mark this for Staff assistance.

Regardless, please state what browser and version you are using.

  • I have read that wordpress post, but thanks @justjennifer.

It is very complicated to use this image uploading thingy even if I understand how to (it’s certainly not an improvement, that’s for sure). It was much easier to simply upload images by clicking and uploading. I should say — the new way was more complicated, since today (unlike a few days ago) it doesn’t work at all. Red circle with red line through appears, presumably some error message (?) and the image won’t get where it’s supposed to be going.

Chrome, latest version (according to info: Version 23.0.1271.95 m).

  • I’m using Chrome (Version 23.0.1271.95 m) and Firefox (updated today)

In Chrome I can’t dynamically resize images in the edit window, I can in Firefox. Also the sizes on offer for inserting into posts don’t include a full column width option which was always there before I’m sure and the results seems quite unpredictable, eg I’ve had wider images change width but not height to fit the column in Chrome and spill over the column width in Firefox.

I don’t mind the design changes in principle but there seems to be a strong flavour of “it aint broke but we are going to fix it anyway” and in general it’s not working as well for me as it did before.

And the link to the announcement is not relevant, what it says is fine, it’s the stuff that’s been chucked out or broken that’s a problem.

  • Just come back to my blog after a few months so not sure when this all started.

    @chrisrust
    – I’m sorry you are having problems, but no where do you (or the other posters) mention that you had seen the announcement and therefore to me it was quite relevant to mention it. Please don’t shoot the forum volunteer who is trying to assist.

Thanks for mentioning which browser and version you are using and encountering your problems with. Since this thread has been tagged for Staff assistance, please be patient while they get back to you.

  • I am among those who do not find the new system an improvement. I join the chorus of, “Please can you go back to the prior system or at least offer it as an option?”

  • Sorry Jennifer, I didn’t mean it as criticism of your action, just trying to be clear that this is about functional problems and faults with the new system, not our failure to understand it (which is kind of implied by your action :o)
Actually the new system is perfectly self- explanatory, as it should be.
    Best wishes
    Chris

  • @just jennifer
I was looking for an explanation and this forum is where I ended up…i will see if the VIP people can help. Did not think of them because I haven’t needed to ask for any help for a long time…

  • Hi there @jeremyandpaula,

I see that the image you specified is coded like this:

    [caption id="attachment_894" align="alignleft" width="200"]<a href="http://seventeenbysix.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/dsc_0119.jpg"><img class="size-medium wp-image-894" alt="De-scaling a fish for dinner, Cabo de la Vela " src="http://seventeenbysix.files.wordpress.com/2012/12/dsc_0119.jpg?w=428" height="300" width="200" /></a> De-scaling a pargo fish for dinner, Cabo de la Vela. Bear Grylls eat your heart out.[/caption]

I assume that you manually updated this code? You’re right that you shouldn’t have to do that every time.

I see that the image ends in .jpg?w=428 – this is specifying the width that you are overriding with the caption width set to 200 and then an additional width property set to 200.

An attachment page is a page that you can set up to showcase each image at it’s full-size, so when a user clicks on a small image in your blog, they can see the whole thing, along with some accompanying text if you so choose. These are set up automatically.

Could you insert an image into a new post (you can set it to private) and provide the link so I can see a problem image before you have to work on it?

Cheers, we’ll get to the bottom of this!

  • Hi there @chrisrust,

Could you provide me with a link to your blog as well as a specific post that is giving you problems?

    Cheers!

  • Hi there @Zooey,

You should absolutely be able to upload photos while you’re working on a post without having to go to your media library first.

The new media uploader still allows you to manually select images from a list, rather than dragging and dropping.

Have you cleared your cache lately? You may be experiencing some residual issues with old cookies. Here is more information about how to do that:
    http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/

Could you also provide a link to your blog so I can take a peek?

    Cheers!

  • It’s also a pain in the bazotski that i have to switch to html to get text in where i want it, rather than posting photos between already written text. And it takes longer when you have to upload photos one at a time!

  • Thanks @zandyring — it does seem to be working now, luckily! I can’t drag and drop but I can click on images (which I prefer anyway) and they upload as they should; I’m not sure why it didn’t work, perhaps I did something wrong… So I don’t have to go to the media library. Works fine!

  • @Zooey,

I’m glad it’s working better for you now!

  • I am not able to upload any photos today. Yesterday it was working okay, but today it takes me to choose the photo for the media library, and then when I try to choose, I get a blank pic, with a loading bar… that never loads. I’ve tried all different types/sizes of photos and nothing is working :( Please help?

If you need to take a look at it for problemsl. my blog is http://www.SockmonkeysKitchen.com

  • HI ! Same problem here!! Unable to upload ANY pic…Working perfectly yesterday…
