‘Private’ setting on ‘Publishing blog’ is not working

  • Hi I can’t seem to select ‘private’ setting when I want to publish the blog. Could you please check and fix it?

    Thank you.

    Site: https://gooly2012.wordpress.com.
    WP.com: Yes
    Correct account: Yes

  • Hi there:

Can you let us know the post title of the draft you’re trying to publish and the URL of the site you’re trying to publish on? I don’t see any drafts under gooly2012.wordpress.com newer than October 2019.

    Thanks!

  • Hi

My apology for the confusion. The blog post that I have intended to privately published is here
    https://wordpress.com/home/intodifferentphasesoflife.wordpress.com

    Thanks !

  • I can confirm that site is set to private.

  • Thanks staartmees. I have set the site to be private. I have tested to post a blog on another WordPress site that is not set as private. The “Private” posting of the blog however is still not working. So I think there is something wrong with the “private” function on the blog “publish”.
I wish I can do a screenshot to clarify what I meant by this but I don’t think I can do it on the forum.

  • @gooly2012, You can use an online tool for that (such as https://snipboard.io/) and paste the link into your reply.

It would also help to know the address of your test post, so we can have a look and advise.

  • Hi WordPress staff

Thank you for suggesting to use snipboard.io for me to share the screenshot.
Please follow this link – I have also typed the problem on the screenshot, attempting to explain how the “Visibility” setting within a Blog Writing page was not working. Thanks

  • Thanks for that – that helps! I logged into your account and when clicking the “Public” link under Visibility first instead of clicking “publish” and selecting “Private” , I get a pop up asking “Would you like to privately publish this post now?” with a “cancel” or “ok” button:

    Screenshot: https://d.pr/i/PBxHDM

When I tried this on my test site, clicking OK automatically publishes the post as a private post.

Going through your workflow (clicking Publish first, then changing visibility), I get the same pop up prompt asking if I want to publish the post now.

Check your browser settings to see if you have pop ups disabled or if you have an extension that blocks these types of pop ups and that should resolve the issue.

You can test if it’s a browser setting by opening up a new incognito or private browsing window, logging into your account, and trying to publish the post privately.

Let us know how that goes!

  • Hi, thanks for your reply and troubleshooting. I have allowed pop-up on the Chrome setting (see https://snipboard.io/GuOZVo.jpg ), there’s no pop-up when I click “private” under “Visibility Setting”. The same problem remains.
I also added wordpress URL specifically to allow pop-up (https://snipboard.io/7nS0xw.jpg) but there’s still no pop-up.

I tried in incognito mode as well as on Microsoft Edge but nothing works.
I think I’ll set everything to password protection. Thanks again for your help.

  • Hi there,

I tried in incognito mode as well as on Microsoft Edge but nothing works.

To clarify, did you try incognito mode on Microsoft Edge or are you saying that you tried incognito mode on a different browser in addition to Microsoft Edge? If the former, I want to see if the same issue persists on a different browser such as Chrome or FireFox, or if this is an issue for you no matter the browser you use.

    Let me know, thanks!

  • Hi, I’ve tried incognito/ inPrivate mode in both Chrome and Microsoft Edge. I don’t have Firefox (my apology as I don’t intend to add more browsers on my laptop). For now, it is the two browsers I have on my laptop and I have tried both of them (in normal mode and inPrivate/ incognito) and the issue remains.

In any case, I am happy to set a password to protect each blog, which I think is better than setting it Private. Many thanks!

  • Hmm, I had a look, and, same as my colleagues, I can publish the post as private without any issues.
It does sound like some local problem with the pop-up on your end.
From your screenshot, I don’t see any browser messages alerting about a popup to be open. I wonder if it’s opened in the background (behind the opened tab)? It would also be interesting to know if this keeps happening when you temporarily deactivate all your browser extensions.

Also, note that there is no need to set every post as “Private” if your whole blog is set to Private as well. Anything you publish on a private blog will only be visible to you and the viewers you authorize:

  • Hi, thanks again. Just wanted to give an update. For some reasons, the “private” function is working again. Thanks again for the troubleshooting and help.
