Photos from Imported Blog Missing!

  • Hi there, i moved over to WordPress.com at the end of Dec 2011. i followed the instructions & imported all my old content from my Livejournal blog (yoongz.livejournal.com) –

      everything was fine

. But now i had to redirect someone to a previous entry & i find that all the photos are missing!! What happened?
i thought that when i imported the old content everything (including images) got moved to WordPress.com?? How come the images are missing? What’s the point of allowing importing of content when the images go missing after a few months? The posts don’t make sense without images!!!
When someone moves content from an old blog to a new one, normally that means one is giving up the old blog & expects to be able to migrate EVERYTHING to the new blog.
Please explain what has happened. Some of those images are the only ones i have left as my HD crashed middle of last year.
Am i expected to re-link every single one of those images? – that’s like hundreds & hundreds of images (some of which i no longer have)
    HELP!
    please reply ASAP.
    Thanks
    Best regards, sandra

  • I have flagged this thread for Staff attention as we Volunteers cannot help you with this issue.

  • BTW it would be helpful if you posted a link to an example of a post that images are missing from. I can see images in your posts – lots of images. I did a random check of several posts. It’s also possible that you have a browser issue. These are the troubleshooting steps we take whenever any issues like this arise:
clearing your browser cache and cookies > http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050
using the browser with all extensions or add-ons disabled
updating the browser to the latest stable version (not a buggy BETA browser version) http://browsehappy.com/
confirming third party cookies is enabled http://support.google.com/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=61416
    confirming JavaScript is enabled http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=12654
confirming Flash is updated http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ and if required installing the latest version of Flash http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/
resetting your router and modem and rebooting your computer
then logging in using the secure https:// log-in see http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/
    trying another browser

If those do not work we need to know how are you connecting to the internet and to WordPress.com? The way you connect to the internet (mobile, satellite, DSL, dial-up) and to your blog, and how many proxy server jumps etc. it takes to connect can cause problems. There maybe be problems with your ISP and/or with the proxy servers.

And exactly which browser and version of it are you using. If you don’t know click here to find out > http://whatsmyuseragent.com/

  • HI timethief,
Thanks so very much… it is actually all the posts which were imported from my previous Livejournal blog – all dated before Jan 2012… everything from Jan 2012 was composed in WordPress so have no problems.

    Here are some examples:
    http://trippingdifferently.com/2011/11/05/schlaf-im-stroh-sleep-in-straw/
    http://trippingdifferently.com/2011/12/02/literary-happenings/
    http://trippingdifferently.com/2011/09/02/exciting-new-adventure-1st-grade-or-primary-1/

So everything from Jan 2006 till Dec 2011, have no photos…

If there was a need to re-link or re-import the photos, there were no instructions to indicate so during the import process.
i searched carefully & read the instructions carefully for importing from another platform before i even chose WordPress to move to. It seemed the easiest to move to.
    Now i’m thinking maybe not…

i understand about the browser issues but i have viewed & checked my blog immediately after i imported & they were fine – everything was there, even a few weeks after the import they were still there. But now that my subscription with Livejournal (my previous blog platform) is expired, the photos have disappeared. Again i repeat, there was no instruction on WordPress.com to re-import/re-link photos. My assumption was that all photos would also be imported into WordPress Gallery but it looks like my assumption was wrong…

Now i would like to know if there is a way to redeem this & get all the photos from Jan 2006 to Dec 2011 back into the posts.

    Thanks.

  • Are the images that are missing hosted on third party image hosting sites like Flickr, Photobucket, etc.?
Are the images that are missing ones you linked to on other sites on the interent?

  • The images exist only on my previous blog. Not on any 3rd party website.
i just rechecked the links for the images – they are still linked to pics.livejournal.com
My question is – shouldn’t they have been moved to the WordPress gallery for my new blog when i did the import?
Again i repeat – there was no instruction to re-link during import.

  • I have flagged this thread for Staff attention.

  • Thanks so much for your efforts timethief – i hope they respond as quickly & efficiently as you did.

  • For the most part, we don’t modify image URLs when importing from third-party sources, since there’s really no way to distinguish between images that were part of your original site vs. images that were embedded from elsewhere (like Flickr, Instagram, etc).

  • Dear macmanx,
so is there a solution now?
Or am i doomed to having a blog with 250posts which don’t make much sense without their photos?? As i said previously, many of the images were lost in my HD crash & the ones posted on the blog were the only copies.
My next question is why was this not advised or even mentioned in your import process?? If it had been, i would have manually imported the photos or at least re-saved them off my previous blog. That’s just a great mis-information on the part of WordPress, which claims to be very professional. Not informing your users of such a problem is completely unprofessional.
Please rectify immediately so that no one else would suffer as i did…

  • Are the photos still on your LiveJournal blog, or did you delete them after importing?

If they’re still there, I recommend re-uploading them here.

  • My account has expired – i no longer have access to them.
i allowed my Livejournal account to expired because i trusted the import process provided by WordPress was complete. As i said before, there is nothing in your import process instructions which recommended or highlighted the fact that images may have to be re-uploaded. Besides the point, 250 posts with images is alot to expect someone to re-upload manually especially if the post are some 6 yrs old. Your import instructions should be more complete or else your import process needs to be better.
So does this mean that those 250 posts are doomed to be meaningless? Images are important to most of my posts.
i’m very disappointed with WordPress now… i put in a fair amount of effort in selecting WordPress to move my blog to & now this happens!!
Please rectify this ASAP – suggest a workable solution!!

  • There is really no way to rectify the situation. If the images didn’t come over, and you allowed your Livejournal account to expire, they’re definitely gone.

Even if we could get a way to import the images, the originals left when you allowed your Livejournal account to expire.

At this point, your best bet is to contact Livejournal to see if they can temporarily restore your account or at least give you the images.

  • SIGH! OK fine.
    i’ll try that.
Now please tell me why this was not highlighted in the import process instructions?? Why did WordPress not inform potential users that this could happen if their images are linked to their previous blogs??
Disappointed in WordPress does not even begin to describe how i feel now…
i will be posting about this on my blog now.
