Photo arrangement of previous published posts all changed
-
I noticed today that my last several published posts suddenly changed the position of my included photos. When I had arranged them side by side, all of a sudden they are no longer in that position, and the text has been moved as well. This makes my posts look horrible. Please advise!

Were the images pre-sized to a width that was small enough to be displayed side by side given the theme width for posts/pages?
What is the name of the theme you are using?
-
As well as the name of the retired theme you use, please also provide links to the posts/pages you refer to. I will type modlook into the sidebar tags on this thread for a Staff follow-up. How do I get a Moderator/Staff reply for my question? https://en.support.wordpress.com/getting-help-in-the-forums/#how-do-i-get-a-moderatorstaff-reply-for-my-question

My theme is: motif. I had figured out a custom size that would work to show both photos side by side. I used it for many posts without problems. I always preview before publishing, and they always showed up next to one another.

What do you mean, retired theme?
Here are a few links to the posts that have changed (I don’t think you want me to send all of them, I have seen at least 10 so far):

Motif is a retired theme and cannot be used on any sites it is not currently being used on. https://wordpress.com/theme/motif Themes are retired when they no longer support all WordPress.COM features. This thread is tagged for Staff support. Please be patient while waiting.

Hi tanjabrittonwriter,
Are you referring to the “stacked” appearance of the images? It would be great if you could send a link to a post where the images are sitting as you expect, so I can compare the two.
Thanks!

And I suspect it’s something to do with the captions, but I’ve been known to be wrong. :)
If you look at these posts where there are no captions, the images display side by side:

Hi tanjabrittonwriter,
@justjennifer is correct — captions are causing the stacked appearance of the images in your posts. Removing captions displays the images side by side and I’ve done some testing to confirm this.
While updates are deployed for WordPress.com themes, they become outdated over time and this is the point when they are retired. This means we won’t be releasing any further updates for Motif, or fixes for the caption behaviour.
I’ll be happy to make some recommendations for newer themes if this something you are interested in.
Thanks for your detective work @justjennifer and the information you provided @timethief!

Yes, I had noticed that only photos with a caption were affected.
What I don’t understand is how it can happen that posts that were already published weeks ago and that looked the way I wanted them to at that point, suddenly change the arrangement of the photos.
How does a blogger find out if his/her theme is outdated/retired? This is the first time anybody mentioned this to me.
And, yes, I would be interested in finding out about similar themes that allow me to present my text and photos.
Thanks to everybody for your input. I was away from my laptop all day, only got around to checking your messages now.
Best,
Tanja -
Hi Tanja,
How does a blogger find out if his/her theme is outdated/retired?
We don’t send direct notifications when a theme is retired but the information is available on your Themes page. Click on the “Info” icon at the top and there should be a note saying Motif has been retired.
What I don’t understand is how it can happen that posts that were already published weeks ago
The last revision for “Stuttgart’s Green Sides-Part 1” was made 3 weeks ago so I’m going to speak to the theme team and ask what they think could have caused the change.
And, yes, I would be interested in finding out about similar themes that allow me to present my text and photos.
Sure! If you tell me what you like about Motif, I’ll pick out some newer themes with similar features for you to look at.

Hi Tanja,
So it looks like the issue with captioned images is occurring because Motif is outdated. Instead of aligning image one left and one right, you may want to consider inserting a gallery for each pair of images:
https://en.support.wordpress.com/gallery/
Either choosing a Tiled Mosaic or a gallery style that gives you the option to choose a number of image columns (such as Square Tiles).
-
Hi Gemma,
Thank you for all the information. I had already intended to ask about a way to size my photos differently, and a tiled mosaic is probably how I would have to go.
Is there a problem continuing with Motif for now? Do I have to expect any additional changes in the appearance of previously published posts?
Thank you,
Tanja -
Hi Tanja,
Is there a problem continuing with Motif for now?
You can continue using Motif providing you don’t switch to a different theme. If another theme is activated, it won’t be possible to go back to Motif since it is no longer available. That would be the point where you would need to use a newer theme.
Do I have to expect any additional changes in the appearance of previously published posts?
We won’t be releasing new updates for Motif now it has been retired, so there won’t be any changes to how the theme looks or works. It does mean that we won’t be allocating development time to any new bugs that arise.
I hope the gallery options help with your image alignment :)

@gemmacevans – Just thinking out loud here, but I was using Button on my knitting site, then Button 2 came out and there was a notice in my My Sites dashboard that there was a newer version of the theme available. Perhaps a similar notice for retired themes could be done with a link to the Themes support doc, if not to related theme suggestions?
-
Perhaps a similar notice for retired themes
Yes, I have been thinking about something along these lines too and have mentioned it internally. It would certainly help with communication around retired themes.
-
GMTA. :)
It’d also be great to add a note about retired themes in general on the themes support doc, and not only retired premium themes, although I have a nagging feeling someone (@kathrynwp?) may have done something on this…?
Sorry Tanja for all the somewhat off-topic chatter on this.
