Permalink, the ultimate question

  • Just noticed the date on my posts url. So I went to find how to get rid of it and I found 3 different kind of answers:

1.- It is possible on wp.com with a Business Plan, no need of any plugin.
2.- It is possible on wp.com with a Bussines Plan, it is needed to install a plugin.
3.- It is not possible on wp.com, no matter which plan you have, it is just possible on wp.org.

Please notice all these anwsers come from users marked as “Staff” here in the forum, so they are supposed to have some knowledge about what they are talking of.

    1.- https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/permalinks-44/
    2.- https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/dates-in-permalinks/
    3.- https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/permalinks-in-wordpress-com/

Of course, the date of the answers are different, being the 3rd on the above list the newest. I know this can be the key factor.

So, please, let’s try once for all to solve this question:

A.- Is it possible to remove the date on the wordpress.com url posts?

B.- If so, which plan will allow me to do that?

C.- Would I need any plugin?

D.- If so, which plugin would I need?

Anyone able to clarify this? I (and potencially many others for what I see) would benefit of clear anwsers.

    Thanks in advance!

  • Hi there,

The correct answer in the first one. You can change the permalink structure of a WordPress.com site only if you upgrade to the Business plan and you don’t need any plugin, the option to do so is in the settings.

  • Hi,

I’ll try to answer these in order

A.- Is it possible to remove the date on the wordpress.com url posts?

From what I could find it seems technically possible with a plugin which you would need the Business Plan for. Without a plugin the plan allows you to change the structure of the permalink.

B.- If so, which plan will allow me to do that?

Business Plan, it allows the use of plugins or use the self-hosted WordPress.org

C.- Would I need any plugin?

    Yes

D.- If so, which plugin would I need?

There’s multiple permalink plugins available here https://wordpress.com/plugins/
You can choose one that would work for you

  • First of all, many thanks for your replies, guys!

OK, so two different anwsers… Although being grateful with both, I guess I should take the first as the one to go for since it comes from a Staff member,

    But,

fstat, you replied in this post (just1 month ago!) to this very same question that it was not possible on wordpress.com, only on wordpress.org.

    “Hi there,

The permalink structure cannot be changed on WordPress.com sites. It can only be changed on the sites using the open source WordPress.org software”.

    You see what I mean…

How is this possible? What changed in one month?

    Am I missing something??

  • Please disregard that reply, it was posted in error and I have already corrected it. Thank you for pointing this out.

  • Perfect!

Really happy to know the right anwser! ;-) Which I put here at the end of this post for anyone having the same trouble:

“You can change the permalink structure of a WordPress.com site only if you upgrade to the Business plan and you don’t need any plugin, the option to do so is in the settings”.

Thank you so much, fstat. I mark this question as resolved.

    Cheers
