I know nothing about Joomla but I really like this template. Is there anything like it on WordPress? I’d even pay a fee for it…

My blog is actually going to be a website for my writing business and I’m having a custom banner and word mark done by a designer. It will feature archival photos and I’d like as much real estate as possible for the photos.

You cannot use Joomla themes on free hosted WordPress.com blogs. The only themes you can use are found here > Appearance > Themes
There are 200 themes you can review here http://theme.wordpress.com/
There’s searchbox for feature filters there and all themes have descriptions and live demo sites.

There are several themes that have large areas for pictures – I don’t care for them so have not paid any attention other than to read the news about the new themes – follow the link @TT gave you above – you should be able to find several with big picture areas
