Need Help with Erractic (Frustrating) Behavior: Portfolio Projects Won't Display

  • I’ve been a WordPress.com user since March and I’m finding that periodically my site refuses to display my portfolio projects. (“Ooops! That page cannot be found.”) I can usually remedy the problem by changing the theme, adding a new widget, saving it, and then changing the theme back again and rebuilding my widgets (which I invariably lose in the process.) But now my work-around isn’t working either!

This problem, although (seemingly) random and erratic, is becoming consistent. Consistent enough that I check daily to see if I have to fix my site. My site is completely useless if my projects don’t display so any help in solving the problem permanently would be truly appreciated!

Additionally, when I am building a project I always get the same “Ooops” error if I try to use the “Preview” button. I have to save the project and then view it in order to see it. (That problem has been consistent for about two months whether I can see the project on the live site or not.)

I’m currently using the Skylark theme (I switched this week) but this also happened with the Highwind theme that I was using before. (I’m limited to which themes I can use due to the design of my site.)

Thanks for any help you can give.

  • So far in virtually every case of bloggers making this complaint it would seem that they do not follow or understand the set up instructions found here https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/skylark/ and the associated support docs at https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/ and https://en.support.wordpress.com/portfolios/portfolio-shortcode/. Have you consulted them?

  • Aha! Thank you TimeThief. When I read it earlier, I missed the small troubleshooting section at the very bottom of your second link about unchecking and rechecking the portfolio box. (That’ll teach me to read more thoroughly!)

I guess my next logical question would be, is there something I can do to prevent this from happening in the first place (i.e. is there something that I’m doing that causes this?)

Again, many thanks for helping me repair my site!

  • Sorry but I cannot help you beyond what I posted above.

  • Would you please let us know the URL of the page you’re referring to?

Also, is the issue currently visible, or is it in its fixed state at the moment?

  • The site is https://clsrmusic.wordpress.com. It’s currently working fine at the moment – TimeThief’s suggestion of disabling and then re-enabling the portfolio feature on the Settings – Writing screen fixed it. So my question is: Is there something I can do to prevent this from happening again? (Am I doing something to cause this? I do have a knack for – and a history of – stumbling on obscure ways to “break” software…) Oodles of thanks for any answers on how to prevent this pesky problem.

  • It’s hard to say, I’ve never heard of this problem, so I couldn’t even begin to suggest how to avoid it. :)

If it every happens again, please just reply to this thread with the URL of the page and leave it as-is so I can take look.

  • Will do – thanks very much!
