Menus
-
I am really struggling to build a simple website with wordpress. I would like a static front page, a header image, but a visible menu either on the left or on top for contact and another page. I have tried soooooo many themes but can not seem to get the menu to appear. Is there a theme you could recommend? I really do not want any extra colours involved or widgets down the right, I hope you can help many thanks

Have you read the relevant support doc for creating custom menus?

Here is a link to your detailed theme description page https://theme.wordpress.com/themes/eighties/
You cannot remove any theme elements from displaying without CSS editing and that requires an upgrade. The custom design upgrade can be purchased and renewed as a separate upgrade only by those who have username accounts registered prior to September 1st, 2014. See here for details on purchasing the annually renewable custom and CSS editing:

Moka might work. However, the menu and header are both small and in a column on the left. Check out the demo at https://mokademo.wordpress.com/
Plane has a left-aligned menu above the header image area:
https://planedemo.wordpress.com/It’s also possible to make minor modifications to any theme, such as moving the menu from left to right or placing it above the header image instead of below if you have purchased one of the WordPress.com Plans which gives you access to the custom CSS editor. If that sounds like something you’d like to try and you find a theme that would work well if you could just move the menu, let me know and I can help you with a CSS example so you can test it out to see if it will work for you. The plans also give you access to custom colors, which you could use to make the colors more plain if needed. And in many cases you can remove all of the widgets to leave the sidebar blank if you’d like.
Let me know if one of the themes mentioned above looks good out of the box and whether the plans interest you or not, and then we can go from there.
