Media Library won't display/upload images both online and localhost

    I basically went to upload a featured image to my site and basically all of sudden all my images won’t appear in media library yet they’re still showing on my site. I can’t upload any images either, when I try to upload one I get this error message ‘An error occurred in the upload. Please try again later.’
    I took a copy and ran it on localhost and it’s the same. I’ve changed the file permissions via ftp on the upload folder and still doesn’t fix it.
    Only thing I can think of is I had installed a plugin previously to the media library breaking so I deleted it but this hasn’t resolved the issue.

    can anyone give me any suggestions or advice? thanks
