looking for new theme – magazine meets blog

  • Dear all,

I am looking for a new theme for my blog dpvandijk.com. I like sites as the Washington Post’s (https://www.washingtonpost.com/), Monocle (https://monocle.com/) or even this one http://www.ceesnooteboom.com/?lang=en.

I want it to give a quick overview of my different blogging categories (without having to scroll down to see 2nd and 3rd post), as well as to have a clean look. Need to have the option for pictures. I have tried several and am ok with my current one (the Arcane theme) but think there’s a better one out there.
    Which one would you suggest?
    thanks!
    Daniel

  • Hi Daniel,

I came up with the following suggestions of free themes after looking over the sites you like:

    • Dyad features posts in a slider at the top of its home page and also displays other posts in a grid-like design, making them easy to browse over.
    • Canard matches up well with the “magazine meets blog” description you gave of your site.
    • Gazette is also another theme designed with magazine/newspaper sites in mind. You can easily view a post’s category from the home page

Theme choice is very much down to personal preference and, so, I also encourage you to have a browse through our repository. You can filter based on different criteria, including Magazine and Blog types, along the top:

Let me know how you get along with that or if any questions come up along the way.

  • Hi
thank you – hadn’t seen the Canard yet. Looks nice.
They’re still too photo centered, to my taste. And lack some functions, as extra widgets and menu options.

It’s indeed a matter of personal preference, but tips from others may be of inspiration:-). the Arcane is good, but would be even better if it had smaller icons, better overview – more a newspaper look I think…

I have no problem paying for a good theme (as I did with my current one) – what would be your suggestions in that case?

    thanks again!
    Daniel

  • Hi Daniel,

In terms of Premium themes, a few that popped into my mind are:

    • Daily Mag, as you can tell from its name, is designed with magazine-style sites in mind.
    • Bromley is another more colourful magazine-style theme.
    • Watson is another example of a minimal theme that fits in well with your “magazine meets blog” description.

I’ll be happy to help with any questions on the above.

  • You’re welcome! Let us know which one you end up going with and if you have any questions.
