Login problems
-
I can log in to my Colouring the Past blog (which is currently private) with Firefox and can also see the home page. I can log in to the same blog with Opera but then when I click to view the home page, it tells me that it is a protected blog and I need to log in.
Clearing cache makes no difference. I prefer to use Opera.
The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

Hi there,
This is happening because your blog is private and you are not logged in to WordPress.com on the Opera browser.
Open Opera and log in to your WordPress.com account by going to https://wordpress.com/log-in . Then you’ll be able to access the site.
-
No, I’m sorry but you’re not understanding me. I can log in fine in Opera. I can open My Sites and I can get to wp-admin dashboard. When I click on My Sites to get to the My Home page, and then click on the Visit Site button, I get this page:
This site is marked private by its owner. If you would like to view it, you’ll need two things:
A WordPress.com account. Don’t have an account? All you need is an email address and password — register here!
Permission from the site owner. Once you’ve created an account, log in and revisit this screen to request an invite.
If you already have both of these, great! In other words, it has logged me into my settings, but won’t let me see my site.
I’ve tried logging in again in that way, but it doesn’t work as I’m already in the account! I’m posting this comment from that account – how could I do that if I were not logged in to it?
Before I logged in via Opera, I made sure I was logged out via Firefox and also I cleared its cache, so I’m not logged in any more via there.
I’ve also tried going to my Home Page by just putting its URL in the address field, but that doesn’t work either.

First, please make sure that your browser is up to date: https://browsehappy.com/
If it is not, please try updating your browser or switching to a different browser.
If it is, please do these two things:
1. Try clearing your browser’s cache and cookies.
2. Try with all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily disabled.
Please let us know how each step goes for you, and which browser (and version of) you’re using if you’re still having trouble.

Opera is on auto-update and updated itself yesterday before this problem began and I wondered if that was causing it so I looked at my settings in it and can’t see anything amiss. I don’t think I have any add-ons that are in operation while I use WordPress but I’ll double-check. Also I have all cookies enabled in it including third party. I’ve cleared the cache countless times and nothing makes a difference. I’ll see if I can find their changelog and find out if there’s a bug. I’ll return to this thread if I can’t make any progress.
I’ll have to use Firefox for now (it’s what I’m currently in).
Thanks.

@valcolours, are you on the beta opera? It looks like that’s what updated most recently:
https://blogs.opera.com/desktop/2020/10/If not, please do let us know which version you’re on so we can check that.
To me it sounds like a cookie issue: your site (on its own domain) does not seem to be recognizing the WordPress.com login.
One way you *might* be able to test that: do you see anything here?

@supernovia Thanks. Yes, I can see the wp-admin dashboard fine. I’m logged in to it at the moment in Opera. But I still can’t get to my home page from this browser. The version of Opera I’m currently using is up to date and is 71.0.3770.198 According to my settings there, it last checked for updates today (2nd October) but I was presented with an update window as well yesterday. It does it at odd times, always has done. As far as I know it’s not a Beta version (though if it were, that would probably explain it.)
Since posting my previous comment I’ve checked cookies, checked add-ons (I only have two and neither are used on WordPress.com, cleared the cache (several times) and still no change. I also made sure that my site with and without the domain allowed in both cookies and tracking. I am wondering if it might be a cookie to do with the… I can’t think of the term for it, sorry… the thing that happens when it switches from wordpress.com to my domain.
-
That’s very odd. Is there any improvement if you allow third-party cookies or disable any cross-site tracking prevention?
-
An additional bit of info. If I click the login here button on the ‘this site is marked private’ page, I get my userpic and name and
Log in to your account
Continue
Not you?
Log in with another account. If I then click the continue button on that screen, I get straight back to the ‘this site is marked private’ screen. It just seems to be continually looping. I’ve checked cookies and other settings yet again, and no go.

Hi there,
Have you tried clearing all cookies, and then logging back in?
Also please visit http://supportdetails.com/ in Opera. Take a screen shot of the information there, and upload it to your site’s media library. We’ll be able to see it there.
-
Thanks. I can confirm everything looks in order there.
Have you tried deleting cookies yet? If not, try manually deleting all
wordpress.com
and allwp.com
cookies, and also any cookies forcolouringthepast.com
(you can also just delete all cookies, but that will log you out of all websites you’re currently logged into. Then go to https://wordpress.com/log-in and log back in before checking your site again.

I’ve been completely clearing the cache every time. That includes all the cookies. I don’t mind that it logs me out as I always log out of accounts after each session anyway, I think it’s more secure.
I think this must be an issue with Opera’s latest update. It’s fine in Firefox, and also in Chrome. It was fine in Opera until yesterday, too. But I just wish I knew what was wrong. I can see my home page, via Opera, in my other blogs just not this one. As the other blogs don’t have their own domain (but are paid accounts – I went for that to get rid of the advertising) they are opening to the home page fine in Opera. So it’s got to be something to do with the browser not recognising the domain cookie or something like that.

So it’s got to be something to do with the browser not recognising the domain cookie or something like that.
That’s exactly what I suspect, yes. Clearing cookies and logging back in usually fixes that, though, so I’m afraid I have no idea why it isn’t working in this case.
-
Oh well, never mind. Thanks for your help, @kokkieh and everyone else. Even though it isn’t, I’ll mark this resolved. I’ve decided to stop using Opera for this site, will switch over permanently to Firefox and use Chrome as a backup browser. It’s a bit annoying as I’d switched to Opera from Firefox as the latter had been glitchy (a couple of years ago), but never mind.

I’d add that I seem to have similar problem with Opera for both me and my wife.
Difference here is that our blogs are not private, but we can’t “like” anything (comment, other user’s comments): pop-up will show up for a moment (without any content) and soon disappear. And not, I’m not going to stop using Opera like OP did. I’m pretty sure you can simply repro the issue (seeing that it is pretty consistent and seem across different accounts/ devices and seem to revolve around WP not recognising in *some parts* that we are logged in) and figure out what is the root cause here, right?
Meanwhile I will try to cleanup cookies/ cache and see if that helps, but since it didn’t help OP I suspect it won’t be any help…
Blogs where I see this issues:

powershellpl.netHope that you can help with getting to bottom of that!

This only happens on sites on custom domains, not on sites using free example.wordpress.com addresses, correct?
The issue is most likely that Opera is blocking the cookie we use to track that you’re logged into WordPress.com when you visit sites that are on their own domains. Safari does the same, but it provides an option to disable this blocking. I can find no such option anywhere in Opera settings, so I can only assume this isn’t something they allow you to disable.
There’s nothing we can do about this from our end – until and unless someone comes up with a way to detect someone is logged in across multiple sites that doesn’t depend on cookies, you’re going to have this issue on any privacy-centric browser like Opera. It’s only a matter of time before this becomes a problem in Firefox and Chrome as well, so our developers are searching for solutions, but for now there’s nothing more we can do besides the suggestions we’ve made in this thread.

I have this exact same problem using a private wordpress.com hosted blog and Chrome. The blog is at subdomain.family.blog so it is fully hosted by WordPress.
If I try to login using the login with wordpress option, it doesn’t work. Though often if I click “Login with another account” button and enter the exact same credentials, then I am able to view the site. Note that this only seems to affect the site itself, not the admin area. If I navigate directly to the admin area, I am logged in without issue.

Hi @devinberg there is a similar issue with the most recent version of Chrome that causes issues with our “login session” cookie, and leads to issues like the inability to “like” content, and other permissions issues.
Can you try clearing your cache/cookies by following the steps Google recommends here and let us know if that resolves your issue? Thanks!
