linking pdf's etc

i have been able to link some text, which suggests you can download a pdf by clicking that text. i uploaded the pdf’s in the media section, however when i click the text it opens a new window which is a blank page. am i able to have pdf’s on my site for ppl to download? or do the pdf’s need to be stored on another server or something?
