Link to existing content

  • Hello, I’m running into an issue which I hope I can put into words correctly.
On my blog, I often link back to existing content. I know how to do this, it’s not that hard. I usually type my post and then I go through it looking for the parts which I want to link to earlier published content. I then highlight the word (or group of words) I want to link up and click the paperclip to create a hyperlink. Now this is where I run into an issue, or actually, more of an annoyance. To link the word I selected to existing content, I have to retype that word in the search box in the linkwindow which pops up when clicking the paperclip. Now, I know this may sound quite lazy, but if you have to link up as many things as I often do, it does get annoying.
Even more so, because it didn’t used to be like this. Before, when I selected a word in my text and clicked the linkbutton (paperclip), the word I had selected automatically showed up in the searchbox and posts containing that word showed up underneath. I then just had to pick the post I was looking for and voila, I was done.
What I don’t get is, what changed? And how can I change this back? I link to existing content much more than I link to external content, and this extra step is just getting very annoying.

    Hope someone can help!
    Thanks!

  • Hi there,
I am using Firfox 26.1 and I don’t have that linking issue. Please work through what follows and report back.

    1. If you are not running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/ please try upgrading or switching first.

    2. If you are using an IE browser in compatibility mode please disable that mode. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1196-internet-explorer-compatibility-view-turn-off.html

    3. If you are running one of the browsers and versions listed at http://browsehappy.com/

    (a) Try clearing your browser’s cache http://www.google.com/support/accounts/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=32050

If applicable see here for instructions on how to clear the cache for Chrome and Safari on the iPad:

    (b) Make sure that you have both third-party cookies enabled and JavaScript enabled

    (c) Disable all browser extensions or add-ons temporarily.

    (d) Try enabling HTTPS: http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/

Add both *.wordpress.com and *.wp.com to your list of trusted sites under the Security tab. Make sure to uncheck the box for “Require server verification (https:) for all sites in this zone.” http://en.support.wordpress.com/https/#frequently-asked-questions

    4. Try using another browser.

    5. If you are not successful let us know:
    (a) Exactly what kind of device you are using to connect to the internet and to WordPress.com.
    (b) Exactly which browser (and version of it) you’re using by checking here if necessary http://www.whatbrowser.org/
    (c) And exactly what any error reports you receive state.

  • Thank you for your quick and thorough reply. I’ve taken all the steps you posted, but unfortunately, I’ve had no luck.

I’m on a mac OS running version 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and my preferred browser is Google Chrome. I’m on the latest version (31). I’ve also tried modifying my blog on other browsers (Firefox and Safari), but the issue remains.

Just to summarise the issue: If I highlight a word and click the link button, the window opens but the highlighted word is not in the searchbox. Instead my cursor is in the box at the top of the window where I can put in a URL.

I didn’t used to have this issue and have always used this device and browser to work on my blog.
