Image size smaller suddenly

  • What has happened? All my uploaded images turned smaller today. Even the images in my archive are so tiny that you can’t see the picture.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • I do not witness that on your site at http://baraenbildavmig.wordpress.com/. I am on a PC running Windows 10 and using Firefox 54.0.

  • Thank you Timechief!
    Done.
I’ m using a laptop, Mac Book Pro.
    OS X 10.12.5
    Safari 10.1.1
    Java and Cookies are enabled.
    Flash not installed.
With Firefox the archive images are normal, but the images in the posts turn smaller, as in Safari.

  • Hi there,

What exactly do you mean by “archive images”?

Your site looks fine to me in Safari as well. Can you please check what happens if you press Cmd-0 (zero) on your keyboard while viewing your site in Safari?

  • I’m running The Duotone theme. My archive button leads me to a page with small images of my posts. I like it very much, but suddenly the images are so tiny that I can’t see what’s in them.

    Nothing happens.

  • Okay, that Archive is a feature of your theme, and shows thumbnails for all posts published in a given year. I can see the pictures just fine, though:

    https://cloudup.com/cQ6V-eH2Bxh

If you look at the theme’s demo page, it displays the same way:

    https://duotonedemo.wordpress.com/2009/

Are you saying the images on that page used to be bigger? Or that you are seeing something different from my screen shot?

There hasn’t been any recent changes to this theme. The theme is retired, though, so as features on WordPress.com change and as new browser versions come out, the theme will eventually stop working. You might want to consider starting to look for a newer theme under My Site ->Themes.

  • I see the images a fourth of the size of the images at your screen shot. They were normal before. The same with the images in the posts. When I open my blog, I can see them big for a second, then they turn smaller.

Why is the theme retired? Why don’t theme users get a message of this?

  • So I think that recent WordPress changes has caused the problems.

  • “A quarter of the size…”

  • Hi there, In FF54 I see your archive page images at the same size as the demo page that @kokkieh linked to in his last reply. However, I do see the images smaller than what appears in his screenshot.

    Perhaps this sounds silly, but
What is your screen resolution (mine is 1280×1024)?
Is it possibly you’ve accidentally zoomed your browser?

  • Hi Justjennifer,
    My screen resolution is 1140×900.
No, I have checked the zoom, it is set at 100%.
In Firefox the archive images are normal, but not the images in the posts, they are too small.

  • Hello again, here are a few temporary screenshots I took in FF54 (removed) Again my screen resolution is 1280×1024.

The first two are from your site; the two following are from the demo site. I can’t see any difference.

Since we can’t see what you are seeing, perhaps the best thing would be for you to make screenshots and upload them to your site’s Media Library so that Staff can take a look at them. https://en.support.wordpress.com/make-a-screenshot/

  • Thank you for trying to help me. Your screenshots look good, just as I would like my site to look like.

Now my screenshots are in my Media Library.

  • Staff will review them when they return to this thread. Thanks for your patience.

  • Okay, it looks like this has been caused by a change on our end, specifically a change in how we display images on Retina screens. That’s why you see it on your Macbook, but @justjennifer doesn’t. I also couldn’t see it on my external monitor, but on my Macbook’s Retina monitor I do.

Because your theme is retired, it most likely wasn’t updated to compensate for this change. I’ve reported it to our theme developers in case it’s something we can still fix, but it might be time to start looking for a new theme.

  • Thank you for your answer, Kokkieh. That’s what I suspected when I read about the changes concerning Retina screens. I still hope it’s possible to fix, I’m a bit too tired for big changes.

But I wonder why the theme has been retired without sending a message to theme users.

  • As a theme being retired doesn’t prevent you from still using it, we don’t send out notices when that happens, though you might sometimes see a notice in your dashboard if we released a newer version of your existing theme. Also, in most cases you can keep using a retired theme without problem for quite some time. This is one of the rare cases where a systems change impacts on the theme, though.

If it’s something we can fix, we usually do and you’ll be able to keep using the theme for some time still. But eventually it will break, either due to a change on our end, or a major update in the way browsers work.

Also keep in mind that your theme is not responsive, which is probably one of the reasons why it was retired. That means it doesn’t automatically adjust for people viewing your site on small screens like mobile phones and tablets. This also has an impact on your site’s SEO, so do start thinking about changing your theme, even if we’re still able to fix it in this case.

  • Duotone is unique in how it works. I don’t think there’s any newer theme that acts the same way (i.e. taking background color from the image).

  • Duotone is the only theme that does this, yes. It’s also the only one I know of that has this archive page feature, which is why I’m not suggesting alternatives from the newer themes :)

  • Ok, now I know a bit more. Thank you both for being so helpful. I really like the archive page with the images, it’s so very smart for a photo theme. The background color changes can sometimes be a bit too much, but I do like the purity of the theme.
