Illustratr: More than 3 colums possible?/ How to change the max width of posts.

  • Hi, I’m making my website with the theme: Illustratr, and have a couple of questions.

    1)
I have many portfolio pages categorized by project-types like below:
    http://yukinishimura.com/project-type/illustration/
Here, projects are displayed in 3 colums only. I know that is the default setting in Illustratr, but is it possible to change the maximum number of columns from 3 to 4 or 5? Or, It will be even better if the numbers of columns keep increasing by following the size of the window.
I just want to display as many projects as possible in one sight, because at the moment, there are big blank spaces on both sides when the window is large, and I want to fill them up with more projects.

    2)
In the portfolio page, it looks like the maximum width of the post is set… to be… 840px? Probably. Where and how can I change this max width to 1000px or something? I want some of my images to be wider in the post in the bigger windows.

    Hope I make sense… Thanks.

  • Hi, I just posted questions here but I’m sorry I have another one…

I’m making my website with the theme: Illustratr.

Is there a way I can keep my menu always on the top? At the moment, if I scroll down on the page above or in the other long posts, the menu disappears and I will have to scroll all the way up to find the menu. I don’t need a sticky menu, just want it stay on the top always, on PC, tablets and phones.

    Thanks. Hope it’s possible…

  • Hi,

    1. portfolio columns number — I don’t know if making the number of columns in a portfolio archive responsive to window size is possible on Illustratr, but I’ll tag the topic for staff attention. I suspect that this will be treated as a suggestion to be passed along to the theme designers.

A convenient alternative would be to substitute a static page with portfolio shortcode inserted in it for each automatically generated portfolio archive page. The number columns may be specified in the shortcode.

Example: Insert a portfolio shortcode such as the following

    [portfolio columns=5 include_type=illustration]

into a static page. Then provide a link to that page instead of to the “Illustration” project type archive in the menu.

    2. increase max page width on Illustratr — I’ll leave that one for staff to respond to.

  • Hi there,

I’m sure it’s possible… you might be able to find a CSS solution that will work for you for example. Two things though:

The CSS would be outside the scope of what we typically offer here:
    https://en.support.wordpress.com/custom-design/css-support/

So for advanced customizations, we’d usually refer folks to UpWork.com.

Also, the site isn’t hosted here with us:

    WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

If someone’s already shared a how-to, though, you can likely find it here:
    https://wordpress.org/support/theme/illustratr/

Also, you might clarify what you mean by not sticky but staying at the top. With the right terms, you can likely find a how-to on the web, even if it does mean making a child theme.

  • @yukinishimura21 just noting since your site is hosted with another provider, you could also create a child theme that includes the extra columns as well as a menu that stays at the top.

There are a ton of how-to resources available in the docs at https://wordpress.org/support/ , or you can hire someone via UpWork.com or another site.

Sorry I was away for a while. Thanks a lot for your advice and tagging this topic. I will start with trying the shortcode first and see what happens.
    Many thanks always!

Sorry for my slow response, but thanks a lot for your help. I will have a good look at the links you gave me, and if it’s too hard for me to handle, I might check up UpWork.com. Thank you so much!

  • @yukinishimura21,

    You’re welcome!

    ,

Please see also the topic Protect Project Types with Password on Illustratr by @yukinishimura21. I may have given irrelevant information there as well, as I hadn’t noticed that the site was hosted elsewhere.
