I was wrongly charged for a business domain and I’m not a business.

  • I just got an email stating I was charged $300 for a business domain. My blog is NOT a business, and I need to get a refund right away.

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • A WordPress.com Business plan is just the name of the plan. It is not just for businesses but for anyone who needs the features the plan offers. These features include Livechat support from staff, unrestricted bandwidth, realtime backups and much more. The Business plan also gives you the ability to sell stuff. Perhaps that is a feature you don’t need and perhaps you could happily downgrade to a cheaper plan. Have a look at the below link and reply with your thoughts. This thread has been tagged for staff so they will reply in due course. Note that a free plan wouldn’t work for you as you have a custom domain.

  • Thank you for your reply; I really appreciate it. I have had the premium plan, $96/year, but I was just charged $300 for one year. I don’t understand this at all and would like an explanation for what happened.

  • Hi!

@themagicrobot has given you accurate information. The Business plan is just the name of the WordPress.com plan you have purchased.

    https://wordpress.com/support/plan-features/business-plan/

You originally purchased it in 2020, it was renewed in ’21 & ’22, and then recently again on 2023-09-21.

    Does that clear things up?

  • If you would like to downgrade to the Premium plan, please contact us via email or chat here and we can help you out:

  • You’ll have to wait till a Staff Member is available. They have access to all info and see what happened.

  • Yes, I would like to downgrade to premium and get a refund for the overpayment. My domain was originally with Alohaworld.com but then I switched to a private account, which I believe up till now has been $96/year. Thank you so much for your help.

  • Hey there,

Many thanks for that confirmation there.

I’ve gone ahead and downgraded the site to the WordPress.com Premium plan and refunded the difference for you.

This will take up to 10 working days to appear on the statement of the card charged.

You should be able to see this in the billing history here: https://wordpress.com/me/purchases/billing

    I hope this helps.

  • Thank you so much for your help, aleone89; I appreciate your quick response to my note and for the link. It looks like I was charged differing amounts for the past several years. Do you know how that could have happened? I’m grateful that you refunded the difference for me.

  • Hi there,

t looks like I was charged differing amounts for the past several years. Do you know how that could have happened?

What different amounts are you referring to? Please check your Billing History at https://wordpress.com/me/purchases/billing and let me know which ones are your referring to.

  • On 9/21/22 I was overcharged: $300

    On 10/20/20: I was overcharged: $212

On 7/31/20 I was charged $96 so it looks like I was billed twice.

In 2020 and 2022 I shouldn’t have been charged that much; it should have been $96 each year.

    Thank you for your help.

  • Hi @anuheaikauatuahine, we can’t provide refunds for years past, but we’d be happy to help you sort out what the charges were for.

In 2020 and 2022 I shouldn’t have been charged that much; it should have been $96 each year.

Our records show you upgraded to a Business Plan in October 2020, and did not downgrade back to Premium until a few days ago. Please note that does not mean you are a business, but it does mean you purchased a plan with those features.

On 7/31/20 I was charged $96 so it looks like I was billed twice.

This was when you renewed Premium.

You upgraded to Business in October. Normally that plan is $300, but you had recently paid $96. You had only used up $8 worth of that in the time between upgrades, leaving $88 in credit.

So instead of paying the full $300 to upgrade, you were discounted: $300-$88=$212.

In 2021 and 2022, you paid to continue the Business Plan and continued using the infrastructure and features it buys you.

When you downgraded a few days ago, we refunded the excess.

    Does that help?

  • Thank you for your reply. I have no memory of upgrading to Business; very weird. I must have done so by mistake, so I do appreciate you downgrading me to premium again. Thank you so much for your explanation.

  • Thank you for understanding! Cheers!
