I don't want a brand-new format
-
I’ve been using WordPress for years. I’m 85 years young and I have a routine for my blog messages. I like the “old, old” way of preparing my messages. I’m so frustrated because (obviously) the first day of October and a new format. I DON’T WANT IT and I can’t find my way back to my earlier format. PLEASE HELP ME REGAIN MY SANITY because I’m losing my mind trying to get back to familiar territory. My email address is (email visible only to moderators and staff) and the blog I focus on is ThreeQuartersAndCounting.com ~~~ THANK YOU in advance for your help. ~~~Lorraine Edwards

We have tips for transitioning from the classic editor to blocks https://wordpress.com/support/switching-from-the-classic-to-the-block-editor/ and FAQs: https://wordpress.com/support/replacing-the-older-wordpress-com-editor-with-the-wordpress-block-editor/#frequently-asked-questions
And, if you really want to use something like the classic editor, we recommend sticking with the classic block: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
For more details, please see https://wordpress.com/blog/2020/08/13/the-classic-editing-experience-is-moving-not-leaving/
We do recommend the new editor though, and we have some extensive documentation available at https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/

Me too! The block editor system is just plain horrible and confusing.
Also, I used to make web-based user interfaces as my job not so long ago, so I believe I have what it takes to say that this editor is totally user-NON-friendly, so much so that I’m seriously considering switching to some other software, and I’ve been using WP for about twenty years now!
At least give us the possibility to choose, as it’s been so far. And no, adding a “classic block” does NOT cut it, because there’s still the stupid sidebar mess one should be able to use.
I HATE THIS.
Lorraine, their “band-aid” is that you should open a new post window, then click the plus sign (that adds a new block), then search for “classic” and add that in the post. STUPID SYSTEM. However, here’s a guide how to do it: https://wordpress.com/support/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/
(Sorry, but I just can’t make myself be “positive” or “productive” when stuff like this is forced on me)

SINCERE THANKS for your message. It is so reassuring to know someone else is frustrated, too. I join the person who sent the message with “I HATE IT.” ~~ HEY, I’m 85 years young and I have established routines. Even if the “old, old” style requires more work (according to WP), I can be artistic and creative. ~~ Thanks for the tips. ~~ Lorraine

My blog has just been switched to the new editor. Why take something so simple and make it so complicated? I have no inclination to waste my time learning how to use this awfu thing. I am one of the ones who will be now leaving WP.
-
The block editor is horrible and I much prefer using the classic editor. How can I change this back? And no, I don’t want to use the ‘classic’ option in the block editor.
-
I want to do the same. I cannot even add the ‘More’ line anymore and the layout isn’t as nice.
-
I agree. The new posts editor is unacceptable. Even worse is that the new posts editor is the default and there is apparently no one way to keep using the classic editor as the default.
I must be able to select the classic editor as the default so that I do not have to manually select it every time I want to post.
I was screaming mad a few minutes ago and now I have a headache.
Why not give WordPress.com users a choice instead of forcing this garbage on us? We pay you, remember?

I’m with you, guys. About to start searching a new blogging site :(
I just posted a way to get to the classic editor. For that you need to get into the old dashboard, the address there is https://YOURBLOG.wordpress.com/wp-admin/index.php
My post about this is here:

This is infuriating.

This is a terrible editor and the old one should still be available as an option. Listen to your customers and please make this happen.
-
It is still possible to use the classic editing tools by adding the “Classic Editor Block” to any empty page or blog post.
This will allow you to essentially “drop in” the classic editor within the newer block editor, and as long as you enter your content within the classic block, you will see the same toolbar and formatting options you are used to.
More info here: https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/classic-block/

That is NOT what we want, and you know it. Give us the old editor back and let your bosses know that this block editor is a hot mess of unfriendly design.
-
Actually, Jerry, that’s not possible, because that option doesn’t work. Many of us here have tried and found that it only gives errors.

I just followed the post from eija, and his/her tip works!
Previously to edit my old post, I click post name in my posts list. Now you should click to “Classic Editor” link. For your new posts, just create *something* with new editor. Then go to your post list and choose “Classic Editor”.
-
I am thinking of leaving and going to a different blogging site but as my wife pointed out, I would have to learn how to use their editor then, so I may as well try to carry on here with what I know. I could cope with using the classic editor within the new block editor, but is it permanent or is it only for a transition period?
-
I can’t speak for @eija, but the [expletive deleted] new editor is refusing to save my posts. I just get a error bar at the top of the screen informing me that “Updating failed. Sorry, you are not allowed to edit this post.”
I can’t edit my own [expletive deleted] post AND you’ve taken away the workaround to use the actual classic editor that fit perfectly into my workflow.
-
Update: I found a rather involved workaround that let me use the classic editor and save today’s post. No disappointed followers jonesing for their feline fix.
And no, I’m not about to describe the workaround, because at this point I’m convinced you’ll just remove it. But, fellow haters of the new editor, take heart. There is hope, however temporary it may prove.
