How to find nameserver/IP

  • My organisation has a website at http://www.cornwallwi.org.uk, with the domain name and web hosting through 1&1. I have now created a new site for us using wordpress.com at http://www.trialcfwi.wordpress.com.

I’d like to make it so that when someone goes to the the original URL, they get the new site.

I don’t know if this is called pointing or domain mapping or … I’m new to all this.

I’ve been in touch with 1&1 and they say I must get an IP address from WordPress before they can continue.

What do I do and how do I find either an IP or nameserver?

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi there.

The best way to map a domain to a WordPress.com blog is to set your domain’s name servers to the following values:

    NS1.WORDPRESS.COM

    NS2.WORDPRESS.COM

    NS3.WORDPRESS.COM

However, if your registrar requires that you create A records, please note that our IPs change over time. Because of this, your domain might stop working at some point in the future. If that happens, please get in touch with us to find out the most current IPs and then update your A records, accordingly.

If you still want to map your domain using A records, please be sure to create two records using these IP addresses:

    192.0.78.25

    192.0.78.24

    Thanks!

  • Thank you, Darnell. I’ve passed the above info on to 1&1 and, during our phone conversation, was fairly sure they had no idea what I was talking about. They asked me to wait 24-48 hours and said that it should all work by then.

48 hours have passed and now when I go to http://www.cornwallwi.org.uk, I just get a ‘This site can’t be reached’ error message.

I’m at my wit’s end. I’m having trouble communicating to them what I want done because I don’t have the technological know-how. And they don’t understand at all because of a language barrier.

I don’t know what to do.

  • Sorry – the above message should have come from trialcfwi. This is what happens when you manage too many accounts and forget to log in/out! :)

  • Okay, I checked and the nameservers are pointing over to WordPress.com. So 1&1 did their part. Now, you’ll need to map the domain to trialcfwi.wordpress.com. For instructions on how to map, please visit our support page:

Let me know if you need any help. Thanks!

  • Thanks again for your prompt reply! Is there any way to do this with a free WordPress account? We’re already paying 1&1 for hosting.

  • The mapping subscription is an upgrade that we do charge for – you can purchase it as apart of the Personal Plan for $36:
