How to design a WordPress website (create all the pages first), when the exisiting website is still alive.

  • Hi Guys,
I have website hosted with Shopify and I want to move it WordPress. I want to be able to design all the pages first, and then transfer the domain name over and close down the shopify site.
How do I go about creating a WordPress site, without registering the domain name (since I already have it live on an exisiting site at the moment).

    Thanks guys!!

  • Hi there, you haven’t mentioned whether by “WordPress” you mean the open source WordPress software which you would need to host on 3rd party web hosting, or a site here on the WordPressdotcom platform. You’ll want to read our support guide to the differences and hopefully that will help you make an informed decision about which version of WordPress best suits your needs. You can find the guide at https://en.support.wordpress.com/com-vs-org/

If you are looking at hosting your site here on the WordPressdotcom platform, if you sign up for a brand new website here, your website will be visible only to you until you are ready to launch it.

If your WordPressdotcom site will use a custom 3rd party theme or plugins to make it work, you’ll need to upgrade to our Business or Ecommerce plan in order to fully develop your site and only when you are ready, attach the domain name to it. Here’s more on each of those plans:

Let us know if you have any other question after reading those support guides.

  • Hi Jenifer,
I am looking to host via WordPress, so I was looking at the WordPress Business plan, however, for $33 a month. But Can i create my businesswebsite using this plan, even though my domain name is already bought and used currently. After I design the website, is their an opportunity to switch off the Shopify site and redirect the domain name to the new site?

  • Hi there, yes, that is entirely possible to do. Once you have your WordPressdotcom site set up here on the Business plan, you’ll be able to either transfer your current domain or map it, if it’s not possible or you do not wish to transfer it to WordPressdotcom. You can learn more about domains in this guide:

    Domains

But the first thing you need to get started is a free WordPressdotcom website https://wordpress.com/start/about and then upgrade it to the Business plan. All upgrade plans are paid up front for a full year (or two) at checkout and will autorenew after 11 months so as to avoid things expiring.

WordPressdotcom is still very much a DIY platform, but every upgrade plan gives you direct access to LiveChat and email support and as a Business plan customer, you’ll have priority support.

I hope that covers it, but let us know if you have any other question.
