  • Howdy!

As you might know, when you have used up your storage space, you will have to upgrade to a higher WordPress.com plan for more storage.

Additionally, you can consider getting the WordPress.com Business plan for unlimited storage.

This is as mentioned on the pricing page. https://wordpress.com/pricing/

Does it clarify things for you? Feel free to get back if you have questions.

  • Nope. Is there an alertantive?

  • I personally have this issue for a WordPress of my company despite already being on a paid plan. What I do is upload my image on our file sharing server, and then insert the image through URL instead of uploading it unto the WordPress image gallery. Hope this helps!

  • Hello there @upwardsup, I understand from your recent posts that you’ve already purchased an upgrade plan, but I wanted to answer your query in light of the replies you received here and for future forum searches on the topic.

Hotlinking images from other sites and whether that image is then uploaded to your own site’s Media Library depend on where and how you’ve inserted that image in your post or page.

Embeds from other sites, like Getty Images https://en.support.wordpress.com/images/getty-images/ or the other embeds mentioned here https://en.support.wordpress.com/shortcodes/#images-and-documents can be used and, to the best of my knowledge as of this moment, the images are not uploaded to your site’s Media Library. I have not tested all the image embed options mentioned on that page.

Inserting images from Google photos https://en.support.wordpress.com/photos-from-google/ from your Post Editor will upload them to your media library as will images inserted by URL in the Visual Post Editor. (Note that the button says “UPLOAD” and that is what it does.)

So while you do have some other image options that don’t depend on your site’s storage space, as @strikebuys mentioned, you may find it easier to upgrade to the Personal plan which includes an additional 3GB of storage space for your uploads, for a total of 6GB.

If you resize and optimize your images for display on your website before uploading them to WordPressdotcom, both the 3GB under the free plan and the 6GB (total) under the Personal plan, your site’s storage space will last you for years. https://en.support.wordpress.com/media/image-optimization/

Some observations about linking images from other sites:
    1. you give control over the display of that image to someone else. If the host site is down, the image may not load at all, or if it is a very large image, it may cause your site to load slowly.
    2. from a seo viewpoint, it is best to host your own images.

Hope that also helps to answer your question. Best wishes.
