How do I widen the column/remove padding in Radcliffe 2?

  • Hello. I could use some help with adding some more CSS, as I’m new to it. I’m working with http://www.danielwalsh.net, using the Radcliffe 2 theme with the vintage paper style pack and a premium account.

I am trying to do 2 things with the text on each page:

    1) Widen the text column on each page.
I don’t mean the margins within what appears to be a sheet of paper on the screen, but rather what’s outside them. The narrow, centralized block results in a lot of dead space on the left and right, and I don’t plan to use sidebars. (At least, not yet, and I don’t think this theme even has that option.)

    2) Decrease the dead space at the top and bottom of each text column.
I’m not sure I would make this change, but I at least want to experiment with it to see how it looks.

I haven’t identified the correct selectors for this and could use some help on some additional CSS to put into the site. I’ve found good answers to other questions in the archives here, so I’m hopeful someone can help with this. Thanks for your help!

  • Hi Dan,

Rather than playing around with CSS (we’re not really able to help with that), I’d suggest looking for other themes that support full-width layout without sidebars, for example:

    https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/full-width-template/

You can also check the specs of each theme to make sure the main content area is wider than what you’re looking for. For Radcliff 2 it’s 740. You’ll find this info at the bottom of each theme’s page.

Also, remember that with your plan you can access Live Chat directly via https://wordpress.com/help/contact. That way you can get help faster.

  • Ah. That’s too bad. I had seen a few topics like this and this where staff members had answered questions just like this. I would not have asked otherwise.

  • To clarify we can help with small tweaks, but in this case to create a custom full width page template would require the help of a CSS professional (web designer) due to the amount and complexity of code involved.

You might want to consider hiring a freelancer from Upwork who can help you with that custom CSS, to get your site looking exactly how you want.

You can get the process started here:

Also we can sometimes help in live chat with more complicated CSS on a case-by-case basis, so again you are encouraged to check with us by starting a live chat session here: https://wordpress.com/help/contact
