Help editing gallery

The new implementation of galleries is still a work in progress and isn’t yet usable. Unfortunately, support for old galleries was removed…too soon, as it turns out. As it is, there is currently no way to create a usable photo blog page.

Is there any news on fixing this?

Countless improvements have been made to both the Gallery Block https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/gallery-block/ and the Tiled Gallery Block https://en.support.wordpress.com/wordpress-editor/blocks/tiled-gallery-block/ since your previous threads.
Would you please describe what sort of trouble you’re having with them now?
-
Thank you for replying. How does one learn that there are improvements? Are there release notes I can peruse?
-
No, we generally don’t publish release notes as iterations are made quite often.
Development on the editor itself and its native Gallery Block is handled at https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/ and the Tiled Gallery Block is part of Jetpack, so development is handled at https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/

Anyway, if you simply click on the first link to a test page I provided, you’ll see the first problem I reported has not been solved. It takes about 8-10 times longer to load this page with the new gallery compared to the classic gallery version of the same page:
-
@rodrigospacecraft when you update your own installations, they come with release notes. We tend to apply fixes more regularly here, but you can follow along at https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/ if you’d like.
We also have a public repository for WordPress.com’s interface:
https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso -
https://rodrigospacecraft.com/test/ is clocking in at 2.6 seconds: https://gtmetrix.com/reports/rodrigospacecraft.com/jxocVfYT
And https://rodrigospacecraft.com/2019/01/12/146/ actually clocked in at 2.0 seconds: https://gtmetrix.com/reports/rodrigospacecraft.com/T8b1xm23
I also didn’t notice any performance difference when I looked under Firefox 69.0.1.
Which browser, and version of, are you using?
-
I’ve copy/pasted a message from the threads I linked above with details on the first problem to help you see it. Supernova reported earlier this year that the fix was almost done. But that was 5 months ago.
Page with classic galleries:
A re-creation of that page with new galleries:
https://rodrigospacecraft.com/test2/I get a load time of 9 seconds for the classic gallery page, and 45 seconds for the new gallery page.
-
-
Which version of Chrome?
I also don’t notice any difference in load time under Chrome 77.0.3865.90 and Safari 13.0.1 under macOS 10.14.6.
-
I’m using Chrome Version 77.0.3865.90 (Official Build) (64-bit).
I’m a little confused. According to Supernova in the thread above, this is a known problem and I would be notified when it was fixed.
-
We may have dropped the ball on letting you know that the feature requests were implemented:
https://github.com/Automattic/wp-calypso/pull/34878
https://github.com/Automattic/jetpack/pull/12974As for load times, I am definitely seeing no speed difference on my end.
What I’m seeing is inline with the GTMetrix reports that I linked to, where both are loading in about 2 seconds. And per the GTMetrix report, the new gallery is actually slightly faster.
-
hmm, I get the same gtmetrix results you do. But when I load them, I see a significant difference between the two pages. I tried 2 different networks.
Anyway, here’s another of the problems I reported above, the pictures are jumbled and overlapping. If you compare the two pages, most of the pictures on the new gallery page are overlapping with adjacent pictures. I’m seeing this in both Safari and Chrome, in both MacOS and ios. Is there some way I can upload a screenshot here?
-
Please use https://snipboard.io/ to provide a screenshot.
Here’s what I see in Chrome 77.0.3865.90: https://cld.wthms.co/NOi3Gc

Hey @rodrigospacecraft, my apologies for not following up. We had a couple of issues going on.
I use the Boardwalk theme, I still see the same weird overlapping issue that you see. I’ve reported that here:
https://github.com/Automattic/themes/issues/726Regarding the speed thing, I thought that was resolved, too, but I can see on webpagetest.org that one version of your gallery is loading about 2MB and the other loads about 13.
I’ll do some more testing on this side to see what I can find.
-
Yes, there definitely shouldn’t be a 6.5 to 1 ratio for the loading size. And that overlapping problem that I originally reported long ago still exists.
It seems like we’re still in the same place we were six months ago, with the new kind of gallery not working right and the old kind of gallery working great, but creation of them has been eliminated from the editor.
It’s only natural that it will take some time to get new galleries to work as well as the old galleries. But, considering the pace at which this progress is happening, wouldn’t it make the most sense to restore creation of classic galleries in the meantime?

You posted that same comment way back in April in this thread :).
https://en.forums.wordpress.com/topic/cant-add-an-image-gallery-to-a-classic-block/#post-3316892
As discussed in that thread, that does not create a gallery.
-
Hi @rodrigospacecraft, the issue in Boardwalk is now fixed.
The developers noted you’ve got a mix of blocks on the test2 page. Would you be willing to go ahead and create a new gallery test page? In fact, if you could, just create two. Use the same images in each one — you won’t need to add as many. Then we can re-run the tests.
Thanks in advance.
