Free Domain Name?

Wordpress sends me an email saying “Heads up! Your Free Domain Name Is Waiting” I click on the link and it takes me to a couple plans that I have to pay. I guess to get the “free” domain name?
Why do I have to pay for a plan for a “free” domain name?

The Pro plan includes a free domain registration or transfer for the first year, then the domain renews at the rates listed here: https://wordpress.com/support/domains/domain-pricing-and-available-tlds/
