Featured Images not displaying full size

  • Hi. Since yesterday, the featured images for my posts have not been displaying at the full size resolution they have always been. After clicking in to the post, the featured image is blurry and pixelated. No settings on my end have been changed, I cleared my cache and tried deleting and re-uploading to no avail. Sometimes, my images inside the posts will also be blurry, but it seems to be mostly the featured image. What is going on and how can I resolve this? Thank you.

  • Hello there @jareddgoodman!

Can you indicate which device you are viewing the site, stadium51.com, on, when the image(s) appear blurry ?

Also, do you have one or two examples of posts where you have seen this issue happening ?

Looking forward to hearing back from you!

  • Yes, I am viewing the site on both my mobile phone (an iPhone XR) and my laptop (a Dell Inspiron 5400 running Windows 10). I am using the Firefox browser. The images appear blurry across my devices.

Every post on my site has a blurry featured image when clicking into it. Here are some links.

Fluor Field at the West End

    Chartway Arena

You will notice that, on the home page before clicking into these posts, the featured image is crisp and high quality.

Also, when composing drafts, the images in the body of the post are also blurry. I have tricked the system into making them high quality by setting the resolution (default is large) to “full size” and then back to “large.”

Not sure why this is happening all of a sudden. Thank you!

  • Hi!

I’ve checked your site and I’m unable to see the issue. You’ve mentioned that you’ve found a workaround – perhaps you’ve already fixed all the posts? If you still have a post that exhibits the issue, could you please share a link to it here without fixing the image issues? This will allow me to investigate further.

This may also be a good time to try clearing the cache on your browser. Here’s a guide on how to do that: Solve Common Browser Issues.

Lastly, could you ask friends or other site visitors who are not connected to the same network as you if they are also experiencing the issue? This information could be useful.

    Looking forward to your response.

  • Hello,

It seems to only be on my laptop and occasionally on my phone. I checked on two other devices and the images seem to be loading fine – however, I did discover that upon increasing the screen size in browser, the featured image becomes pixelated and blurry, while the images in the post do not. So it’s still somewhat of an issue, just not sure what.

  • Hi there,

It seems to only be on my laptop and occasionally on my phone.

This sounds like a cache issue. Please clear your browser cache and check again. You can follow this guide: https://wordpress.com/support/browser-issues/#clearing-your-browser-cache

however, I did discover that upon increasing the screen size in browser, the featured image becomes pixelated and blurry, while the images in the post do not. So it’s still somewhat of an issue, just not sure what.

Is this happening on these posts?

    https://stadium51.com/2024/05/14/chartway-arena/

    https://stadium51.com/2024/05/15/fluor-field/

If so, I checked these posts but couldn’t replicate the issue on my end (screen size: 1767 x 1328).

Here is how it looks on my end:

If these are not the posts, please share the details so we can investigate further.

We look forward to hearing from you!

  • Hello,

Yes, I have cleared my cache but the error persists.

And yes, it appears on every post with a featured image. It occurs on all devices that I try it on. When I increase the size of the page in my browser from 100% to say, 110% or higher, the image gets noticeably worse in quality rather than remaining the same size.

  • Hello there,

When I increase the size of the page in my browser from 100% to say, 110% or higher, the image gets noticeably worse in quality rather than remaining the same size.

Could you share a screenshot of it?

We look forward to hearing from you!

  • Sure. Here’s one post at 100% screen size:

And here it is at 110%:

    Here’s another at 100%:

    And at 110%:

  • Howdy!

I do believe that the theme might be the causing the issue here. Many of your images are large, but the theme will resize featured images to fit the 1080px width. This is mentioned at the bottom of your theme page:
    https://wordpress.com/theme/ixion/

I do see that this seems to have changed for you, though. That is odd. On the Starter plan, your site doesn’t have the performance options that we could play with.

Although it can be daunting to do so, have you thought about changing your sites theme to a Full Site Editing theme? Here is a list to check out:
    https://wordpress.com/themes/filter/full-site-editing+travel-lifestyle/

    Thanks!

  • I will look into those themes and an upgrade as well.

Any idea what might have caused this change suddenly though? The featured images were fine before this weekend, logged on yesterday to discover them all out of whack on my laptop.

    Thanks for all your help.

  • Inspecting the images, I can see that they are being resized, which is expected. However, it does seem that it isn’t consistent. I know you have cleared your cache, but what about visiting your site from an incognito window? Does it act the same way?

  • Yes, I’ve tried in both regular and incognito windows on Chrome and Firefox on 3 different computers. It acts the same on all of them, it gets blurry when zooming in or out in the window.

  • The featured image loads in 1080×720 size. Zooming more than that size may change the image quality, which is expected. Please see this image for your reference: https://d.pr/i/F0fY9O.

I checked the site again from my end and saw that the site’s featured images are loading as expected. Please see this brief video for your reference: https://d.pr/v/1fTzNM

As recommended in our earlier response, you can switch to a Full Site Editing theme, which gives you more control over how the featured image appears on the Post.

Additionally, you can upgrade the site to WordPress.com Creator or Entrepreneur plan to unlock the Performance and Speed options.

  • Good to know, thank you.

So to confirm, if I were to upgrade to the Creator plan, I could resolve the featured image issue without changing my theme?

  • Hi there,

If you want to access the features like Site Accelerator to speed up image load times, you can benefit from upgrading the plan as it gives you access to that functionality on WordPress.com.

You can learn more on that here https://wordpress.com/support/performance-settings/#enable-site-accelerator

  • Hi,

Will speeding up image load times help them display in full format rather than at 1080×720? I don’t need them to load faster if they’re still going to display as blurry.

  • I recommend that you rather optimize your images for your site. As my colleague mentioned earlier in the thread, your images are pretty large in terms of dimensions and file size.

Large file sizes can slow your site’s apparent performance for your site visitors and degrade their experience of your site. We have a guide to optimizing images for your site here: https://wordpress.com/support/media/image-optimization/

I usually recommend that customers resize image dimensions to around 1,500px along the long edge at most (unless you specifically need larger images) on your device before uploading the images. We have other suggestions in our guide.

Doing this will also enable you to make the most of your plan storage.

  • I suppose I will try that strategy. I already compress my images by 75% and this issue still exists. I guess I will resize or compress my images and see what happens, just frustrating to have to do that with every image that’s on there so far.

Also still don’t know why this happened suddenly over the weekend, it was fine until then.

  • I understand this can be frustrating, but the good part of it is that it will help improve your site performance overall.

I recommend you optimize a few images first to check the results, and once you confirm it’s working as expected, continue with the rest.

We’ll be here if you need further help.
