Extend Toolbar Outside A Pre-Defined Area, How?

Add topic to favorites
So I want to extend this blue toolbar (Menu Navbar) which is currently inside a space where my content is. I want to extend it so it goes over and above my side bar.

I have drawn a picture of this. The top picture is what it is now the bottem picture is what I ultimately want, and the red arrows (and black breaker) separate and show what I want.

So I tried creating a “toolbar.php” extension then just doing a ?php get_toolbar(); ?> right after my header, with the style.css having some width/height for it like the header but it didn’t work.

I don’t know alot about CSS and PHP, so I haven’t done much in editing my files, just tweaking here and there–trial and error.

The navigation bar cannot be seen by you or any other wordpress.com blogger unless they are signed into wordpress.com. What is your concern please? And, why do you wish to extend it?

It is for aesthetics. It looks much better to see the bar going across my index and sidebar.

FWIW that’s what I see now. I’m using Firefox 3.5.7 Which browser and version of it are you using?

Also will you please post the URL for the blog you are referring to just in case we are referring to two different blogs?

He said he created a PHP file, used a PHP call, and posted an image of a theme that isn’t on Wp.com – I’m assuming he’s pointing to a .org blog.

So am I and as I have answered another thread he posted and included the support link to the entry on the differences between wordpress.com and wordpress.org plus other information, I am expecting he will figure that out any time now. Since the OP’s username is linked to a WordPress.COM blog, let’s give him/her the benefit of the doubt, especially since their member page shows they’ve been here only a week.

Having said that, as mentioned above, we do not have the ability to change the underlying HTML or PHP on WordPress.com blogs/themes, even with the CSS Upgrade. Check this out. http://en.support.wordpress.com/themes/editing-themes/
