Domain Transfer issues

  • I transferred my domain name to wordpress from yahoo but it is not working correctly. If I go to the domain directly is says there is not page. If I go to my blog on wordpress the name changes from the wordpress.com to the domain name. I am no longer getting my emails on my buisness email. Is there a way to find out the A & C name records as well as the IP address this is what yahoo said they needed to help me since I handed it all over to wordpress? If you have any suggestions please let me know..

The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  • Hi,

These instructions will help you access/modify the Custom DNS (where the A and CNAME, etc records are located): http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/custom-dns/

Most likely, with Yahoo, there were DNS entries (A, CNAME as well as MX for e-mail routing) that aren’t transferred over when a nameserver is changed.

For e-mail, specifically, the MX record is the most important one.

Regarding accessing the site, it looks right to me, being able to access it directly from captureyourphotography.com. When transferring a domain, it can take a little time for the change to promulgate throughout the Internet.

If there is additional help we can provide, please do ask!

  • I added the email information in the DNS box already but since Yahoo is no longer hosting my site that email is not going to work unless I redirect the site through them. That is why I need the A & C name servers and the IP address. Do you know where I can find that information

  • There are a lot of domain problems being reported right now. I flagged this for staff attention.

  • Hi there,

Can you confirm that the domain you are referring to is captureyouphototography.com?

I am able to access your site via that address

I took a look at the MX records for that domain and they are set to:
    MX 1 MX1.BIZ.MAIL.YAHOO.com.
    MX 5 MX5.BIZ.MAIL.YAHOO.com.

These look correct for Yahoo mail, but you’ll need to confirm with them. Yahoo mail might require a CNAME entry to access your mail from mail.captureyouphototography.com. Please get this information from Yahoo and then follow the guide here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/add-email/add-other-email/

Domain names get stored on your computer in a “DNS cache” so browsers can load websites faster. Sometimes when a change is made to a domain name, such as your Domain Mapping settings on WordPress.com, the previous website is stored on your computer, and you can’t load the new website at the same domain.

These stored domains are usually updated every 48-–72 hours on your computer, but you can force it to update sooner by “flushing” your computer’s DNS cache.

You can find instructions on how to flush your DNS cache here:
    http://www.whatsmydns.net/flush-dns.html

That should enable you to see the correct site at captureyouphototography.com. Please let us know if you have any more questions.

  • I cleared the DNS like you said I am still getting the same thing when going directly to http://www.captureyouphotography.com that is what I am talking about there is a blank page. I know the wordpress name changes to it after I got there but just try to go directly to the .com.

  • They said you need to check my DNS settings since I am using your name servers now for my domain. That is whats setting my webpage to not show correctly. They said there is something on your end that needs to be corrected. As far as the email they said you need to recheck this since there has been no email since last Thursday.. They said the name servers are not using the settings.. So can you check and make sure this is correct?

  • I’m sorry for the confusion. It looks like you may have registered the new domain captureyouphototography.com in mistake (notice the extra “to” in the domain). I assume that you already own captureyouphotography.com and you’d like to map that to your blog, is that correct?

If you’d like I can refund the $26 you paid and cancel the domain “captureyouphototography.com” (the one with the extra “to” in it). If we cancel your newly-registered domain, it can take up to several weeks for our domain registrar to release the domain, and we can’t guarantee that your domain will be available to you again once canceled.

You can then repurchase the domain mapping upgrade for “captureyouphotography.com”, which costs $13.

  • I think I may have found one part of the issue.

The domain that is working correctly is:
    http://captureyouphototography.com/

This resolves fine for me, MX looks right, etc. This is the domain associated with your blog currently.

The user is trying to get captureyouphotography.com working currently— notice the difference in spelling.

Not sure how the domains were purchased, etc, but it may be simply an issue of mapping http://captureyouphotography.com/ to your blog and updating the MX records for that domain.

The http://captureyouphototography.com/ may not be needed. It looks like http://captureyouphotography.com/ has been around since 2006 while http://captureyouphototography.com/ has only been around for a week.

Could it be possible that you purchased a second domain instead of mapping it?

I’ll let the staff indicate the best way to get everything straight; I don’t want to incorrectly advise given the complexity of this issue.

  • Whoops. Started writing my response near the same time that Jonathan figured it out. Disregard me :-)

  • Just tell me what I should do on my end. I want to keep the name I have had since 2006.
captureyouphotography.com is my domain since 2006. I very well could have screwed up the registration process I am not going to say I didn’t. I just need my original name I have had since 2006. No need for two names.

  • No problems. captureyouphotography.com is not registered with us, so there’s no way we can delete it. As long as you can confirm that you have no need for captureyouphototography.com (notice the extra “to”), I will delete it and issue you a refund and we can go from there.

  • I do not need that one at all so I am confirming to delete the one with the extra “to’ is find with me..

  • Hello,

I have refunded $13 to your credit card and canceled the domain with the typo. The refund should appear on your credit card in 2-3 business days but may take as long as a week.

This will leave you with a $13 credit on your account. Please add domain mapping by going here:
    https://captureyouphotography.wordpress.com/wp-admin/paid-upgrades.php?page=domains

Please double-check the spelling of your domain when completing that process.

Adding mapping to your existing domain usually costs $13, which is the amount of credit you have left on your account, so you should be able to complete the process at no additional cost. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

  • I go there and enter in the right url that I have do I include wwwor not in the name?

  • If you include “www.” it will be automatically removed when you proceed to the next step, so it’s your choice whether you want to include it or not.

  • Thank you for the help my emails working and the blog is working..

  • Great! Please let us know if there’s anything else that we can do to help.
