Does Google think that 2 Pages Exist?

  • Hi, there.

Our blog, The Quick & Dirty (http://blog.quickanddirtytips.com also known as http://qdtblog.wordpress.com) resides on the WordPress site. While we purchased a domain mapping for our site, we’re still not fully understanding why the following is happening:

–When Google Analytics identifies an incoming link from the blog in its “Referrals” report, it has 2 different URLs associated with many blog entries: one for blog.quickanddirtytips.com and one for qdtblog.wordpress.com. In many instances, it has more referrals from the WordPress domain than the Quick & Dirty Tips domain.

Are we not getting good search engine traction because of this? Additionally, does Google think that 2 pages exist with identical content? Clicking on the WordPress URL redirects to the Quick & Dirty Tips domain, so it’s not as though 2 duplicate pages actually exist. Why does Google thin that these WordPress exist, when they don’t?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you so much,
    Ellen

  • You’re doing fine. It’s just that the older URL has more built-in SEO than the newer one, so for a few months they will both show up. Actually, this is GOOD because some search engines think they’re two separate blogs and see incoming links from one to another in each post, which artificially raises both standings. It should normalize and focus on the new URL within four months, typically.
