DNS Management: UI Validation Rules Need to be Fixed

  • For those who secured a custom domain name thru WP.COM, the management interface at https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/ does not allow entry of TXT and CNAME records (and maybe other records as well) as it ought. In short, the UI flags either a null value or the @ symbol as invalid for the Name field, when in fact those entries should be valid. By contrast, the management interface at https://wordpress.com/my-domains/ allows entry of these values. For those seeking to establish email service for their custom domains, the former tool (i.e., the one that does not allow null values or the @ symbol), prevents valid changes to the domain records. Thus, the latter tool must be used. In its role as domain registrar, WP.COM needs to fix the former tool.

  • WordPress.com does not provide an email service for blogs on their own domains. See here:

  • Timethief: WP.COM is in fact my registrar… my custom domain sits on WP.COM name servers, as I just confirmed via a DNS lookup. And as you can see from the information that I submitted, I am using two different WP.COM pages / tools to perform update on my domain records. One page works. The other doesn’t. Both from WP.COM. I myself figured out the difference and was able to enable email. That’s not my request. The request is for WP.COM to acknowledge and repair the problems with the page / tool at https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/ . Please advise.

  • Hi @dlashar, I’ll contact you via email to get the record you’re trying to add. Thanks!

  • Also, issues with DNS settings would apply to anyone who uses our name servers, whether they’re originally registered through us or not. So thanks for bringing the errors to our attention. I’ll hope for more details via email. Thanks!

  • Supernovia: To repeat, the request is not for anyone to enter any records for me. I was able to do so with the user interface at https://wordpress.com/my-domains/ . So, email for my custom domain registered with WP.COM is now working properly with Google Apps as my email service provider. The request is for WP.COM to fix the user interface at https://wordpress.com/my-domains/ . This latter tool *seems* to be a new UI from WP.COM. It does not work! It flags valid entries for TXT and CNAME entries as invalid, thereby preventing someone like me from updating the TXT or CNAME record as required. You need to escalate this problem to higher levels w/in the WP.COM technical team.

  • Clarification due to a bad copy-n-paste! The form that *works* is at the location that begins https://wordpress.com/my-domains/ . The form that does *not* work is at the location that begins https://wordpress.com/domains/manage/ . For both those forms, the actual and full URL will be appended with the custom domain name that was purchased from WP.COM.

Sorry for the confusion. But it is definitely the case that one form does not work, flagging valid entries as invalid and preventing submission of the update request.

I have filed a note saying the hostname field does not accept @ or Null values. I have found that typing the full host name instead (like yourgroovydomain.com) works, however as many are instructed to enter @ or leave the hostname blank, the invalid hostname error is not ideal.

Did you run into any other problems there?

  • Yes, that was precisely the issue and request! Until such time as the technical team fixes the form, that’s a good tip for others who encounter the problem that I did. They can also, of course, use the form that does work, as documented above. IMO, this issue can be closed.

  • Thanks for confirming. I’ll close this out. Cheers :)
