Creating a forum on my WP site
-
Hello,
I have just launched a website http://www.ketchupmoms.com on WP.com. I would like to now create a community forum where people can respond to questions and share. If you see I have started one off (in the main tabs). Currently its more of a comment and respond layout but people can’t post pics, audio etc. Is there a better/ more fluid way to do this so that it looks more like a forum on WP?
Thanks so much in advance for your advice. The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

For your WordPress.COM blog you have three free workaround forum options: http://onecoolsitebloggingtips.com/2012/04/23/wordpress-com-forum-options/
One approach is to register a forum on the internet and then create a custom menu in your blog and include a custom link to the forum in it.
a custom link to the forum in it.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/#adding-custom-linksThe only chat widget we can use on WordPress.com hosted blogs is found here http://en.support.wordpress.com/widgets/tlk-io-widget/
There is no FTP access and no blogger installed plugin capability on any free hosted WordPress.com blogs.
http://en.support.wordpress.com/ftp-access/
http://en.support.wordpress.com/plugins/There is no upgrade you can purchase here that provides FTP access and the ability to install plugins. See here for a full comparison WordPress.com vs. WordPress.org

Everyone having the ability to post images and media files, etc. is what you do on a wiki not on a blog.
You can have either a public or a private blog and there is no limitation on the total number of contributors to any blog. If you’d like to invite others to publish posts or help approve comments on your blog, you can invite them to be a Contributor, Editor, or Author. If you want users to receive updates each time you publish new content you can invite them to be a follower/viewer.
To change blog visibility to private go to > Settings > Reading scroll to Blog Visibility and choose option 3 . See the guide here http://en.support.wordpress.com/settings/privacy-settings/
Then see here:
http://en.support.wordpress.com/adding-users/ and here http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/They need to register username accounts but do not need to register blogs. They will need to click the “Accept Invitation” button in the invitation email. If they are logged into their WordPress.com account, they will be taken directly to your blog. If not, they will be taken to the log-in screen, where they can either log in or create a new user account.
Note that users who create a new WordPress.com account at that point will still need to return to the invitation email and click the “Accept Invitation” button after doing so.
The limit is sending out 10 invitations at any point in time. It’s a spammer prevention limit. So simply wait and then send out 10 more.

Thanks a lot. I think option 3 may work for me. I will explore Proboards a little bit more.
Also what do you think of Go Daddy forums? I have a year’s worth of website builder from Go Daddy when I bought my domain name from them and I hoped I could use it for a forum that I build on a subdomain. Would I then be able to link the this subdomain community to one of the tabs on my primary website on wp.com? -
If you want to purchase domain mapping upgrade then read and act on what follows.
In order to map to a domain one must have an underlying .wordpress.com subdomain blog to map from, and the domain name you desire must be available for purchase, or you must already own the domain URL.
You must be logged in as Admin http://en.support.wordpress.com/user-roles/#administrator under the exact same username account that registered the blog to access the blog’s dashboard at > Store > My Upgrades to purchase upgrades for the blog.
See here if you do not own a domain http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/
See here for mapping an existing domain that you already own http://en.support.wordpress.com/domains/map-existing-domain/
if you already have a website you don’t want to affect, and you want to add a blog to it under a subdomain (for example, blog.yourgroovydomain.com) see here http://support.wordpress.com/domain-mapping/map-subdomain/
After you do the primary blog set up it can take between 24 – 72 hours for domain name propagation to take place throughout the internet. You can view the DNS changes here > http://www.whatsmydns.net/ What’s important during that stage is to be patient.

It turns out that Go Daddy is not able to host a forum either. I guess I will look Proboards over next. Thanks for your assistance.
